I would try knowing a little bit of Dreamweaver... you might find it helpful in updating your pages... but it also has pretty good FTP tools and features.

Hey, is your ftp software connecting to the host? That's the FIRST thing you should check, if its a new hosting company, you have to make an ftp account in your hosts' control panel. If it is connecting, toggle the "passive" option and try that. If it connects to your host, its definitely something minor that's stopping the transfer.
