Hey guys,
My Question: How is Google Page Rank (PR) plays a role in search engine rankings (SERPS) of your website.
Thanks, Sam

Hi Sam,
It's high. However, if you competition isn't properly minding their Ps and Qs with on-page optimization, then you can take advantage of that.
So, the answer is a bit mixed. Take care of both on-page and off-page SEO. Just because your competition has high PR for a phrase doesn't necessarily mean you can't compete.
That said, PR is quite valuable.
Sorry if that's confusing,

I have personally talked to Adam, (search engine quality team, Google) and he has said that PR is one in 200 factors that Google see. PR is valuable but not valuable as that it was valued before. So this is a combination and it should be done correctly.

Hi Sam,
You're welcome. Yes, there are many aspects to the algo as I have stated in the past. In fact, I mentioned that there were a bit over 200 of them - glad to hear it's in accordance with your own findings.
These are some of the other components in the algo: Traffic, on-page SEO, LSI (relevant phrases), duration of stay, interactivity, and more.
I was mostly pointing out that PR is important but that no one should give it too much weight. It's definitely valuable enough to make sure that your home page PR gradually increases, but I've seen many pages that have a zero PR outrank a page that has a PR4.
I'll repeat what I said above. Take is seriously but don't decide not to compete with a high PR page based on PR alone. There are many other things to take into consideration. A holistic approach is a must in competition analysis.
May the force be with us all,

Thanks NS for detailing out !
Just to add a little more detail. Now a days search engines are working from visitors shoes. That is keenly watching visitor activity. Even for a small change in search algo google watched visitors activity, CTR and other factors.
The best we could do is create websites with outstanding quality, do on page optimization. In onpage make sure the title is not only targeting the search engines but also the users. The more catchy your title is more the visitors come from search engines. Once your CTR (Click Through Rate) goes up, there are chances that your site may be lifted up.
So create compelling websites and PR them well. I say this because home page's PR spreads across the sub pages. So make this a point but dont depend too mush. I know some websites with PR 4 and get hardly any visitor and PR 0 website with tonnes of traffic.
So at the end of the day, value matters and nothing else !
Thanks Sam

hey guys... not quite sure how it all happened but by following instructions that i got from all the good folks here I started a new Thread on thursday on this forum titled 'How Good is Wowgreen'
I googled my title on friday morning and to my absolute astonishment I had NUMBER ONE FRONT PAGE position on google out of 15,100
my wife said "ok smarty pants so now you think you are internet guru"
I replied "not really honey although i followed all instructions I think maybe I just had a little bit of luck too..about time we had a bit of that huh"
ok yeh my ego got tickled a bit but not bad for a newbie who dosn't really know his bits from his bites. as I sit here with a more sober face...."ok, what do i do now?"
Other than my goal to earn a full time living from home, when I get there it will mean I have learnt all the necessary skills needed to succeed, so then it is my goal to pass it on (pay it forward!!) as a sign of respect to those who have guided me so far and are still nursing me though these baby steps
finding this forum was one of the best things i have ever done it is evidence of humanity at its finest.
cheers everyone Anthony

Sam,
Both on-page and off-page SEO matter quite significantly.
Researching the competition matters.
Getting traffic matters.
Page Rank matters.
However, valuable content matters more than anything else.
Put yourself in the shoes of the visitor. What do you want from a site most? You want something valuable. If it's really good, you'll tell others about it. You might even link back to it.
It's a lot more simple than most people think. That's part of the reason why I say not to spend much time learning how to game the system.
Have you ever read something where you can tell that the writer didn't know what they were talking about? I have many times and find it very offensive.
I don't trust people that don't know what they are talking about and I sure as hell don't buy anything from them.
The fake gurus want us to believe in the magic so that we spend money on their products and systems.
The magic comes from studying, researching, planning, experimenting, fine-tuning, and other things that take time and effort.
The magic is in proper commitment.
It all matters but the visitors want what the visitors came to find. Give it to them with authority and honesty. You'll be a rich man if you can study and experiment enough to know how.
Furthermore, it feels good to give someone what they really need.
