For a marketing project, I'm supposed to generate ideas for a marketing promotion for an online retailer. They want to know exactly how many people buy their products online strictly because of the promotion they're doing. I thought of the obvious "discount code" to prove they bought the product through the promotion. Any other ideas?

Why couldn't you track it? Most anything you do anymore with internet marketing can be tracked with simple codes...

some sort of online discount code probably makes sense along with other tracking, maybe with google analytics.

Hi,
im a webmaster of some sites, if you need to track your project first you need a good website which you can track all of your needs,
your webmaster is capable of making a good RMDB (rational mapping of database) so that all of the articles, item, and everything. because your own database is your own tracker. google analytics is good to track your web traffic but it does not track you promotion.
if youre need a webmaster or a consultant dont hesitate to send me a message

A promo code seems like the most logical answer in this case to track the products sold in relation to the promotion.
However, just tracking sold products may not be the only thing to track here. You may also want to track the interested parties as well. Just because the promo may not have generated a sale doesn't mean that it was not affective. The promo is to also there to gain recognition for your brand or product. If someone stops to check out a product, the next time the see it, they may be inclined to purchase the 2nd time around.

Promo code is a great way to do it.. but there is another way if you don't necessarily want to do a discount on the products. but they can also do it with a simple $10 hit to the bank acct instead of giving a 5-10% discount to every employee. You can set up a separate front page (domain.com/word) for the promotion or a separate domain (domain31.com. You see this on Direct Response TV ads all the time (go to www.productname.com/72/ or www.productname72.com. when you go to productname72.com you'll usually either be automatically redirected to productname.com or the next link you click will go to productname.com That way you can check on analytics how may hits you get to productname.com (Normal site) productname1.com (Promotion type1) productname2.com (promotion type 2)

I'm with the others on the promo code, but you are going to need to have programming experience to create some kind of tracking tool for the website. If you don't have the technical tools to do this, you can probably have someone create this for you at elance.com or scriptlance.com
