When it comes to writing articles to get back links is there any "rule of the thumb" as to how many is too many. Some say if you submit article to few hundred directories (even if re-written) that it could back fire and red-flag your site. Does anybody have any experience with this?

For me, blog commenting and social bookmarking really helps a lot. It's fun and a cool SEO job as well.

Quality back links from high PR pages helps you to get high PR. Its not just to have back link from any site, relevancy and page PR counts a lot.
