I'm new to PPC advertising.

I got a free $30 credit for Google AdWords from my host.

I set up my ad and it ran for a while. When I looked at the stats, I saw my first click cost me $0.61.

When I set up the ad, I opted to have Google figure out the best price per click according to my $30 budget.

After seeing this $0.61 click, I lowered it to pay a max of $.30 per click.

I'd really like some input. Is $0.61 per click expensive or not? I don't sell anything on my site, I'm just trying to generate traffic.

Thanks everyone!

Hi Philip,

I would freeze your PPC campaign until you develop enough knowledge about it to proceed confidently. Your funds will dry up quickly otherwise and probably won't result in anything appreciable.

My guess is that you don't really know why you chose to set your click price to thirty cents except that you didn't want to pay more than that amount per click - not a good sign.

Aside from careful experimentation, everything you do in a PPC campaign should have a calculated reason behind it. You'll also have to know how to track and adjust with skill.

You have to know what phrases to use and why. Same with max price per click and pretty much everything else.

Point is, you really have to know what you are doing.

PPC should not be approached like a novice gambler would approach a new card game he/she knows nothing about. Like everything else in marketing, it's a serious study that takes time to learn about before you step into it.

Solution = do some extensive reading on PPC before you put it to use. Again, I suggest that you freeze your campaign until you feel confident about your PPC knowledge.

Excellent advice! And I wouldn't limit that attitude to PPC advertising, but expand it to include every aspect of online marketing as well.

As a matter of fact, if you were to take a single element of marketing at a time, examine it, experiment with it to understand its pros and cons, and then put it to work for you before moving on to the next element, you'd be surprised how quickly you'd become dangerous!

100% true.

That's right. First identify each element involved in online marketing and then study each element one at a time until you've mastered the topic and move on to the next one.

That's how a person becomes competent at pretty much everything in life. It helps to put in a lot of time and experimentation. Sure, it takes "a long time" but then again so does almost everything that is worth pursuing.

Slow and steady wins the race. Play for the long term. Avoid hare mentality (though it is sometimes wise to move quickly on trends from time to time).

wahl2008,

After you study up on PPC, do you have an idea what you want to use the traffic from PPC for?

Are you planning on selling products and if so do you have an idea of what you want to sell.

I'm asking because if I can get some specifics of what you want to accomplish then I can give you some valuable tips.

Tim

I agree with everyone so far..PPC is very tough to figure out and master so unless you have done your homework and experimented don't get all wrapped up in it. Many people out there are losing a lot of money very quickly not knowing how to apply many of the secrets!

Man we sure are lucky newbies. This is awesome and is something that i am doing... starting with something and mastering it then moving to the next... this is hard for me... i'm way too easily distracted, but i'm doing pretty good now.

It's great to hear something we are doing is exactly what we should be doing.

Thanks

People have been ruined by PPC, particularly Adwords. Google has become INSANELY competitive, the small guys with lower budgets are being murdered.

There's a growing number of people who are now turning to Yahoo PPC instead. Apparently it's cheaper and there's much less competition. Also, you don't have to worry about any kind of Quality Score of your landing pages, so it tends to be easier.

Only catch is that they only have about 20% of the search market, (although, I should add, this still translates into millions of people).

Point is, you may want to try them first, as a kind of testing ground, before playing with Adwords...
