Hi All, I was wondering if there are any opinions on text vs picture ads in terms of effectiveness and profitability. I am putting my website together and am not sure what ad style (or combination of styles) would work best. I should specify I mean ads on my site, not for it. Your thoughts?

Hi Dr_Boo,
That changes over time. It seems to me that most have been using text ads. I also think that most are the happiest with text ads.
I think that it also depends upon the picture ad, where it's placed, whether or not it is animated and/or automatically starts playing.
Best thing to do is to experiment with placement, blending, number of ad blocks, and pictures. It may take several months before you can figure out a good plan for your site in regards to ads.
Last, what works for one site probably won't work the same for another site or may not work at all.
You might start out with Adsense text only to see how it goes. Keep in mind that as you develop skills, authority, and grow your traffic, your results for comparing one setup to the other will be affected.
In other words, sites tend to do better as time passes and so do webmasters.
Good luck,

i think picture ad with animation would be more effective then text ad.. people maybe want to click on the animation rather than static ad

For Adsense, what I do is display both text and picture ads. You can always try text ads only for a month, then switch to image ads after a month to see if you earn more.

Picture ad will be impressive as the potential customer can see the product they want to buy. But don't use too many picture ads and avoid animation or flash ads. Simple ads will have a strong marketing effect and bring in more conversion.

Text ads generally convert better than picture ads. Supposedly "blue" text converts better also. Look at google....mostly "blue text ads".

Doesn't it come down to the actual "wording" in the advertising? Meaning regardless of what advertising method one uses, you need the right terms to get a person to click regardless. Moving forward after that just depends on the information that follows on the website, etc.
