Hi All,
I'm starting to get a good sense for the online business model I'd like to pursue, and realize I'll need my own web site and domain. While I have some experience hand coding html websites using notepad, I haven't done anything like that in years. I'm pretty rusty and there are so many new bells and whistles in websites these days that I have no idea how to recreate.
Long story short, I'm looking for a decent program to help me design my site. As I am not wanting to start my business needing to make up excessive start-up costs (ok, I'm cheap. I admit it...) I'm looking for the best free web design software out there.
Any nominations?

Try checking out NVU.com - its a little outdated, but it works pretty good. You can get free templates at OSWD.org. You might also want to check out Weebly.com

Wordpress would be a good place to start. Not only is it free, it is also an open-source application for processing blogs. Just ask here if you find it difficult to install

You can install WP very quickly and easily if your web hosting company has Fantastico Deluxe.

You might look into a paid hosting account. They have templates and wizards. You might also look into SBI. They have the same as well as good online marketing info, tools, and a nice forum.

another good one 1&1.com, first go to bluewire.com to register a domain name then go there. They have 2 options a free site which is good and the pro plan which allows more customization. I use them for my affiliate site and is real nice. The best thing is you can promote 3 products on 1 page and they give 5 free sites so you can promote a total of 15 products.

My favorite HTML editor is First Page 2006 by Evrsoft. Do not pay for it, take the free download.
You can also get free hosting at Byethost. No ads, lots of tools, great up time. I have one site hosted with them and 2 others I pay for hosting. I have had more problems with my paid hosting than the free.
Also if you go the paid route I'll agree with Sixty. 1&1 is a great, inexpensive hosting provider. They have a special, ending 6/30 - you get 1/2 off first 6 months.

I ended up downloading Kompozer (the updated version of NVU), but then wasn't quite sure where to begin. I looked at oswd.org for inspiration and downloaded a couple templates. What a great learning tool!
Things like css weren't around the last time I made a web page, and the templates were fantastic for picking apart the css and html files and figuring out how to do things "new school". Now despite my time and effort looking for the ultimate web design software I'm back to my all time favorite... Notepad.exe!! WYSIWYG is neat and all, but lacks the satisfaction of getting down and dirty with the code and seeing things actually work.
I'm such a nerd...

There's a free version of Microsoft Frontpage Express that's no longer supported by Microsoft that you can download, Open Source KompoZer is available by the Mozilla Corporation and then there's other stuff you can get such as CoolPages Free by 3dIze, WebDwarf (shareware) and then there's also SeaMonkey Composer (a spinoff from the Mozilla Suite).
Then you can also consider Microsoft Word (Or OpenOffice.org if you're not a Windows Junkie) but also there's StarOffice and Koffice as well that do exceptionally well.
I would recommend weighing your options depending on what you know best. If you're not fully experienced with some, then CoolPages or WebDwarf may be for you rather than the others. Just see what fits you best and use your best judgement. There's tons of free software out there, just got to find what works best for you.
I personally use Notepad++, but that's not WYSIWIG, but a developers notepad. There's also GEdit (linux only).

For creating my web sites i'm using Photoshop + Dreamweaver, but it will be too complicated for not experienced users to start with i think. So i would suggest you to start with making your blog on wordpress.com or find a free CRM program (for example Joomla) and integrate it with free template which you can find without any effort on the internet, typing in google something like "joomla free templates".

If interested in Joomla though, another CMS system may be of interest called Xoops. It's pretty spiffy, though it's still best to look through multiple systems.
I will state that using a wordpress blog would be best, though be forewarned that Wordpress.com tends to suspend profiles that link to affiliate marketing referral links. So if desiring Wordpress, it's wise to install your own by either using fantastico de luxe script installer from a cPanel hosting package or downloading and installing it manually from wordpress.org.

If you're not very tech savvy I'd forget about installing your own wordpress. There are several EASY Website builders out there now with many features, hundreds of templates, and Free hosting to mess with all that.

Well in my mind, I think to design any template you need Photoshop CS3. That's what I use MY WEBSITE <Snip>
Otherwise you can take a look at WebPageMaker. It is so good for newbies & will help you in coding a lot.

If you are looking for website coding then PHOTOSHOP is fine.But that need PSD creation and importing also.But directly you can create a design in HT ML form using microsoft Dreamweaver.It have a design part which is very helpful in creating layouts

Dreamweaver is a brilliant WYSIWYG editor, but it costs. Steer well clear of "Web Easy 7" or any product of that description... Other than that the best way to go about it for free is to use Notepad++ and learn to code.
