Most of the internet providers actually offer a free web hosting. However, the problem is the domain name which you cannot claim your own. With free webhosting, majority of them attaches ads to your site. Try Squidoo or Hubpages...

Blogger offers free hosting and you can redirect to your own domain for $10 per year. It is then up to you to fine tune the look of your blog. You can make it look like a regular website (not a blog) if you want.

You get what you pay for, and I would caution against building any substantive website(s) with free webhosting. Most are designed to get you to upgrade at some point, but some things are not worth playing with when it comes to your internet business. If you are skilled to handle webhosting accounts, I'd skip the free stuff. There are some good prices on webhosting these days.

Try 000webhost.com. A good free hosting. Just do not participate in the affiliate program they are even presented (deception)

You do get what you pay for an in this case, you get a hosting for free.
if you are serious about your internet success, then go with a company that you will have to pay a monthly membership fee.
If you want to have a "business" online as a hobby and do not want to make any money then go with a free hosting account.

You definitely get what you pay for, I've tried tons of free hosts and never found one that I liked, and it was down for about 1.5 weeks because they were having server issues. If you want it for a free home page for family or whatever then yea sure go the free route, maybe with some ads on the bottom..
if it's for business Look at it this way. Your business is online, if you needed brick and mortar space, or a mall kiosk, or a stand at a trade fair, you'd need to spend some money on rent. There are TONS of places that do hosting for 6-7 a month (Probably cant' name them here due to the rules) and many of them will even toss you a free domain.

I got to ditto what was said. You tend to get what you pay for.
If this is a biz site you're talking about, pay the $10 a month for hosting and $10 a year for the domain.,
You're probably going to come to the point of needing an autoresponder. That's about $20 a month. So you're talking about $30 a month to have your own business.
If you absolutely need to publish online and to pay zero point zero then Squidoo can't be beat, but it's not yours and they can take it down at any time they want.
It IS possible to make money without a website by using the "Bum" method of affiliate marketing. You might work for months before seeing any money, but it's the foundation required to put up a high rise.

Just bear in mind that any free hosting is very likely to be putting their OWN advertisements on your site which will detract from your content!

Just remember you get what you pay for. If using a free web host keep backups of your website whenever you change something.
Also, if a free host has any downtime it will hurt your SERP and PR as speed and access is one of the factors.

IF you are really out of the budget for hosting I think Social networking can handle your site, wordpress.com, fill in a membership for wordpress and have your domain.wordpress.com There are cheap hosting such as fatcow, mporgsoft is right,, You get what you pay for..

Sorry to dig up an old post here, but just wanted to say.. that I used freebee hosting and it was a pretty good place.. they were down for awhile as they moved to a different set of servers so I moved on to paid hosting. They have no forced ads, and a good community of support.

Free Web hosting is convenient but has its drawbacks (limited services / supported by advertisements / you have to use a name provided by your freehost like (http://www.yoursitename.freehost.com).
Free web hosting is best suited for small sites with low traffic, like personal sites.

I have used weebly's free hosting and site builder for to work at home webstites. The only ad they put on your site is a link to weebly on the botton of the page. You can put ads on your site and keep the money execpt with adsense. If you put any adsense on your site they get half.

I used Byethost for a little while to host a Wordpress Blog. During that time I was really happy with their free hosting plan (contained no ads). Check out what they have to offer here: http://www.byethost.com/free-hosting. It's also quick and easy to sign up.

000webhost does offer a basic free hosting service which is great for the beginner. Do a google search and you will find several free ones.

thanks for the links sarah very useful.. like many others people I have often thought starting my own free web hosting.. but since hosting is so cheap these days I cannot see the point .. it's like who cannot affords a few dollars per month for hosting.. 
I host all my websites with Hostgator , I get free tech support And with their quickinstall program I can instantly install dozens of websites within minutes .. too easy
