1) Shiny Object Syndrome - this is you keep trying every new oppurtunity you see. You then proceed to do nothing with it, or fail because of half hearted effort. You quickly buy another ebook or online course to ease your guilt. Then you continue in this never ending cycle. 2) You give up way too easily. People must realize that things aren't always going to work like you planned. You must be willing to make a few mistakes and get past an initial learning curve. 3) Not Taking action. You could have the greatest idea in the world, but if you don't take action the idea is worthless. Nothing happens until you take action.
I would add unrealistic expectations to that mix. Many people are lured to the internet because of the hype and fantastic stories (some true, some not true) that suggest it is relatively easy to become successful online. Consequently they believe that simply having a presence online is all that's required of them. Then, somehow, the magical conveyor belt called the Internet will take them over twists, turns, peaks and valleys, and eventually deposit them in the Land of Milk and Honey. All they've got to do in the meanwhile is sit back and enjoy the ride. For the majority it's that misguided attitude that feeds those 3 killers, destroys dreams and causes disillusionment. Thankfully, they are those fortunate few who manage to snap themselves out of that false mindset and wake up to a different reality. They realize that they must actively contribute to the outcome, and that takes preparation, effort and dedication. Hermas
Great post Maurice. I think the number 1 reason why people fail is because they do give up too easily. If they don't see success overnight, they give up. It's too hard, etc, etc. Not Taking action is another biggie. Sometimes the scariest thing is just getting started. Hermas, you are also right on target about unrealistic expectations. It could take weeks or even months of hard work before you start seeing a decent return.
The thread name is'3 Biggest Killers of Online Success' but the truth is these are the killers of Success Period. It doesn't matter if you want to be successful online, be good at your job or a sport. People want 'fast results' and if they don't get what they want fast they get dis-motivated! That is why Success is easy! I'll give you Tony Robbins 3 step Success Formula: - Decide what you want - Know why you want it - Try different things and change your approach until you get it It is that easy! The only thing you need is persistence... Good luck Art
I'll add another one to the growing list. *Not having a proven and easy-to-follow path to pursue. I'm not saying an "easy" path, but "easy-to-follow." For many of us who started out looking for the path to online business success, the way was completely foreign and new. An understanding of new concepts, new language, etc., are needed, and many of the opportunities/programs available do not outline a clear and concise step-by-step process that, when followed faithfully, will lead to online success. I know we are all different and not everyone likes to follow or work within a set framework, but for folks like me, that is absolutely what I needed/wanted. I don't mind hard work, or the necessity for patience and persistence. I just wanted to follow a set of actionable steps that I could understand and implement with a fair amount of confidence that my efforts would eventually pay off. Without that, the temptation to move on to a new shiny object, or to give up is much greater. Blessings, Angie
All good stuff, but that expectations that far exceed reality kills people mentally so fast. It's crazy, people will go to school for years to get a job they don't like, to live a mediocre life, but won't put in the time to allow a home business to give them a more prosperous life.
Crazy indeed! Must have something to do with the part of our makeup that inspires us to do a good job for someone else, because that person... - is a risk taker - calls the shots - has the connections - went to the right school - had better opportunities - is perceived to be smarter, better, richer - controls the bank we need to provide for ourselves Somehow, those attributes don't seem to have the same impact when we apply them to ourselves. Our knee-jerk reaction is to believe we aren't as capable, fortunate or worthy. We don't qualify. Therefore we dare not even think of assuming the role of "boss". The irony is that we are often content to perform the boss function for someone else, when all it takes is a slight change in self-perception to make the switch and comfortably wear the hat for ourselves. Very true on all these! One of the biggest problems people have is they don't FOCUS on one thing at a time! For example, focus on one method of traffic until you Master it, then move on to something else! So many distractions on the internet, gotta focused and stay determind to succeed!
Shiny object syndrome has plagued me in the past. Not doing it this year. Pick and stick! I guess you could call it a resolution.
Great Post Maurice, I do believe people are looking for a get rich quick program. When that does not work out, they give up. If they could put their hear into what ever business they want to pursue, then they would succeed. Action is my number #1 key to success. After all, if you sit and do nothing, then nothing is what you will have. If you put your action and set goals into your life both personal and professional your will achieve more!!!
Yes I agree Having a tried and tested Plan to follow makes life much simpler. You know where you are going and what your aims are, without these how do you know if you are on the right path
Good points, In my experience, commitment level is critical, you can't go into anything with a half a$$ effort, you either commit with 100% or you will not succeed. There are no short cuts to building home based internet businesses, you have to put in the effort, time and patience before you will ever see success. Procrastination, another major obstacle for most looking at getting started in their own business. I procrastinated for years before I finally started my own business. I always new I wanted to be my own boss, having come from the corporate world, I saw all the politics and a$$ kissing going on, and that was not my goal to a$$ kiss my way up the corporate ladder. Achieving top level results in my position only accounted for half of the promotional consideration equation in the corporate world. Of course, focus, but everyone is different, and the internet allows everyone to focus on success, not just on one product or service, or one company. If you understand the power of the internet, your options are considerably higher than with a traditional business which you must focus on. And this is why home based internet businesses are all I focus on now, a portfolio approach just as I do with my investments, never put all your eggs in one basket has always been my business and investment strategy, and it has proven to work perfectly over time. Online success can only be achieved if you never stop learning the secrets, strategies and solutions to building traffic to your personal domains for your businesses. Never promote someone elses affiliate site, always promote your own url which you forward to the specific affiliate program or other direct marketing site your are using to sell products or services. This is an important factor in success, yet most do not learn the strategies to success when it comes to online marketing. Social-Media-Income is a must learn strategy, and if you don't, you will be left way behind your competition. Most newbies in business have no clue what works and what doesn't, and since the internet is a moving target, by the time you learn one secret to success, it may have worked yesterday, but it does not mean it will work today or tomorrow. You must focus on learning to earn, and earn while you learn, the best strategy for success. Everyone needs knowledge, everyone needs a strategy and everyone should focus on these best marketing strategies to insure success. Success to all,
Couldnt have said it better myself! Wish i learnt this from the start, especially the shiny object syndrome!
