I have about 15 hubs on hubpages and about 5 of them were working their way up on google and peaked at the top of the second page, for my keyword. Suddenly, they all dropped and are now on the 6th, 7th, and 8th pages. I recently started a very amateur blog just to create backlinks to my hubs. Could this be the reason why it dropped? Is a bad quality backlink actually BAD for SEO instead of somewhat weak or useless? I was also interlinking all my hubs so I was also thinking that each hub might have started to get too many outbound links, making them weak backlinks. To sum it up here are my 2 questions:
1. Are low quality backlinks actually bad for SEO or just somewhat useless?
2. How many outbound links are too many? Does the amount of content on page effect this number?
P.S. Any thoughts on pingomatic.com or any ping system like that? Seems to me like a process that might be outdated. Seems too easy, and I know that Google's algorithm changes frequently, cutting out easy SEO methods.
Any help will be GREAT. I'm still extremely new to this, obviously, so any advice would be greatly appreciated.
Thanks, Brooklyn

Google has changed its ranking algorithm and it does no longer includes "love" for those types of pages/sites.

FreeCashMan: Google has changed its ranking algorithm and it does no longer includes "love" for those types of pages/sites. I have been hearing about this - is there a good authority article about it somewhere?
I have lenses and articles pointing to my main site - do you think this can actually hurt now instead of help??

MM5 see my post here: Google changes the SEO "game" article marketing is dead?
As far as I know backlinks are still viable to rankings, but the "content farms" as Google labeled them are not going to be the leading way to get on the first page instantly anymore.
Ezine Articles is in a frenzy. I think we are faced with a solid change for at least 3-5 years, if not indefinitely.

Refer to The Official Google Blog for the algorithm changes update.

This is a great example of why you shouldn't put all your eggs in one basket and rely too heavily on one particular traffic-generating model. It's much smarter to spread your risk and utilize several unrelated approaches.
This way if some situation that's beyond your control happens to derail your traffic strategy in one area, your entire marketing efforts don't collapse like a house of cards.
