I still find creating your own backlinks works much better than buying them.

Has anyone ever bought backlinks that were high quality and produced high quality traffic?

Creating your own backlinks is still quite effective. It's the safest method in my view. Paying for backlinks is dangerous because you just don't know where the links are coming from. Google has currently been deindexing private blog networks, link farms, etc. Plenty of websites have fallen in rankings lately due to the changes in Google's algorithm. The key to good backlinking is link diversity. I'd always recommend that you ensure your linking efforts should contain a link profile that's spread across blog networks, guest posts, forums, social media, bookmarkings and even a few nofollow links.

Welly, buying backlinks are also effective as long as you are not caught by Google.

So to be risk free, we need to build links by ourselves and build manually for better result.

Backlinking has become a very tricky business

The rules that everybody followed a while back have completely changed. What helped our websites rank, now help them to de rank!!

Social Media seems the way to go.

I have paid for backlinks in the form of directory submissions, and I also pay for Senuke which submits my content and links for me. (that probably counts as paying...lol)

"I just don't have the time to do it all on my own and my niche is highly competitive."

But social media is also huge, and in my opinion even those links should be ranked by backlink building. Seo is complex no doubt, I try to keep it as simple as possible and do a lot of everything. (and I can't complain about the results)

I am not trying to sound arrogant in anyway when I say that building backlinks (again I use Senuke for that though) is all I have done until a few weeks ago.

My site landed on page three for work from home in Google and literally "got stuck." (now it's on 4, another story )It took a year to get there but it happened with no social media whatsoever.

Although when it did get there it stagnated, so I started kicking up the social media big time and working on ranking all of those.

If I had it all to do over again, I would do exactly this from day one!

Get involved in social media from the gate, build backlinks to both my site (1st AND 2nd tier links), and also build backlinks to my social media sites. I think that combination would have had me enjoying the number one spot long before now.

Live and Learn!

With all the changes in google what criteria do you follow to find effective backlinks? Do you just comment on higher ranking blogs?
