Trish: As I had stated before I worked this twice. The first time I had been in it for about 6 mo or so. I really didn't care for the smell of some of their products but, tried and used them a good bit. The toothpaste I got I really didn't like the smell or taste and almost everytime I used it I got ill when I went back to the store and got another tube of what I had gotten before I was no longer ill however, I didn't think the toothpaste made me ill but, after reading some of the things that I have found on the net I am know wondering if it had something to do with it. I lived in a very old home that the tub was awful and had taken bleach with very little water and let it soak overnight, got up the next day and looked into the tub and it hadn't done a thing!!! I had gotten some of the cleaning products from Melaleuca and used tub and tile on it , I admit it came out white it looked brand new but, doesn't it make you wonder if bleach didn't get it clean what melaleuca has in their cleaner to make it look brand new????? Trish, I am sorry, but this sounds so naive. The problem here is one of definitions.
What does "all natural" mean? What does chemical free mean? What does poisonous mean?
No, seriously - what does it mean?
In the end everything on this planet is "all natural". We need to use the ingredients the earth naturally provide for us to create things. Sometimes we can break those ingredients down to their smaller parts and conversely sometimes we manage to mix ingredients in new ways. This is then called "synthetic". Yet the original ingredients used came from somewhere on this earth.
All natural is also sometimes toxic. How about snake venom? Virus's? Many ingredients found in nature are highly toxic. Atom bombs are created from all natural ingredients.
All natural is simply a term bandied around for marketing purposes and it means absolutely nothing.
Ok, Chemical free? What do you mean chemical free? Breaking down substances to their smallest parts creates a variety of chemicals. Everything has "chemicals". Chemicals are the building blocks of everything that exists. Some chemicals are toxic - others are not. Some naturally occurring chemicals are toxic. Some chemicals created by mixing chemicals together are toxic. Some naturally occurring or synthetically created chemicals are not toxic.
Poisonous - There are many chemicals around us each day that individuals react to individually. For instance many medicines has different side effects, and different levels of side effects based on the individual. Further more some people have allergies to some substances and what is perfectly innocuous for the majority of people might be deadly for someone with allergies.
In the end claims such as "green", "all natural", "chemical free", "non-toxic" are simply marketing ploys. You need to ask deeper questions to figure out what those means in the eyes of the company making the claims.
Melaleuca oil and tea tree oil is an amazing substance with many well proven medical benefits. Certainly if used incorrectly it can become dangerous. If you use a hammer incorrect (Ie bob someone on top of the head it can be dangerous as well, but you dont blame the hammer for that). By and large melaleuca and tea tree oil is incredibly innocuous and with the possible benefits for using it an amazing addition to any medicine cabinet. Melaleuca oil can often replace medicines with much more dangerous side effects.
As for the lady that posted about her child getting into the toothpaste? That was about the most incredibly unintelligent post I have ever seen. All toothpaste comes with warnings. Go read your regular store bought brand. If ingested or smeared all over your body toothpaste can be dangerous. If someone has some allergy sensitivies to a given toothpaste it can become really dangerous.
A regular toothpaste tells you to use the amount similar to the size of a childs pinky nail, and to monitor a child brushing her teeth as she should not swallow it. With warnings that a child should not swallow an amount of toothpaste that can fit on the childs pinky nail do you think it might have toxic properties? You Bet!
Now - for the cleaning products. I wonder if you ever tried soaking your bath tub in undiluted pure lemon juice or undiluted pure vinegar? I bet you would have seen amazing results! Does that make lemon juice toxic? No, although I wouldnt want to ingest the amount of lemon juice in one sitting that it would take to get your tub clean!
Ohh, btw - lemon juice is a "chemical". As is everything on this earth.
So what is it we are buying from melaleuca? We are buying products that has been created with a look to using chemicals like lemon juice or tea tree oil more than chemicals like bleach. Lemon juice and tea tree oil is just much less dangerous. Does that mean we cant overdose on those two, or use them incorrectly? No, it just means they are generally less dangerous and more healthy.
We are also buying products from a company that makes a lot of efforts to not polute our earth more than necessary in the production process.
Finally, we are buying from a company that allows us to make money advertising their products. Now, the money making part is direct marketing. It is a way to make money in sales. Sales is currently one of the best paid fields on this earth, and this company gives you an opportunity to learn how to make money in sales.
Now, as any sales organization will tell you, about 1 in 10 people has what it takes to become a sales person. I am not sure why that is, but sales is a really difficult field for many people.
So think a little about the concepts bandied about. Dont just swallow everything you read online wether positive or negative about a company.

I got to pipe in here, I was In Mela back at beginning of 90, At that time I loved the products the products was also branded in there own Name and manufactured for them, We had a real good skin care that had Mela in it,also Shampoos and Conditioners, I used those ever day in My hair Salon on my customers,They loved them, Also the Mela Tooth Paste which I think they still carry, Ok getting off track here, Mela changed there products they started carry ever one else's junk, The prices increased, I never found out why they quit making there ON stuff, but do a ingredient check list on the Aspirin's? way over priced, the bottle and box almost looks the same as what the dollar store carry's, The skin care is now some holly wood star who has to have her cut and mela has to have there cut and reps have to have there cut, once again the cost has to be tripled to compensate, also has no Mela Oil in it, So in all honesty there is only a few of the Original Mela products left. If all this had not happen I would still be in Mela ,also at that time there was not a half dozen mela groups to sign up under or the secrecy of the web sites. Just thought I let yall know What it use to be versus what it has become.

Rander: Ohh, btw - lemon juice is a "chemical". As is everything on this earth. Malene, Now I basically recognize what you are trying to say. But I think this last statement is an example of how you may be going a bit too far with all of this. Lemon juice is definitely NOT 'a chemical', neither is 'everything on this earth' a chemical. Certainly all things are composed of chemicals, but that doesn't make all things 'a chemical'!
You wouldn't call water, 'an atom' would you?
Most natural substances, while certainly composed of chemicals, are also composed of non-active 'chemicals' i.e. cellulose, etc. that serve to dilute the effect of the 'active' chemicals, making it much harder to overdose, or otherwise have a negative reaction.
The problem we are having in our modern western society is that we are processing natural substances, down to their 'active ingredient' essential. Making a drug, out of a natural substance that would not be so effective, or toxic, otherwise.
One good example is the Cocoa leaf, used by peoples in the mountains of some South American societies for millenia, without the toxic and extremely personal and social destabilizing effects that occur from the use of the pure 'chemical' product, cocaine.
And certainly there are dangerous things in nature.
We are totally out of touch with nature in this modern day western society, and really are in need of education of what nature is all about and has to offer, BUT of course, we are too caught up in simply trying to make a living to do so - most of us anyway. So we are quite ignorant as a whole, as to what is natural.
But what is man made, is another story. Manufacturers have an obligation to inform us of what is in their product, the dangers, uses, and misuses. They also have a responsibility when the product does do damage.
The real point here is to clearly point out what is in each product, and what kind of problems it can create, its uses and possible misuses - like sweet tasting or looking products like tooth paste or window cleaner, that a child may easily mistake for something to eat.
And by the way, if you look, you will discover that there are certainly definitions of things like 'natural', organic, chemical-free etc. when it comes to marketing.
Rander: A regular toothpaste tells you to use the amount similar to the size of a childs pinky nail, and to monitor a child brushing her teeth as she should not swallow it. I use Colgate toothpaste, when I don't use baking soda. Now I don't have a tube on hand, but are you trying to tell us that such a warning is placed on their toothpaste packaging? I don't remember EVER seeing such a warning!
Rander: Atom bombs are created from all natural ingredients. This of course is wrong, I think you should know that the ELEMENTS used in the creation of an atom bomb are extremely unstable, and virtually do not exist 'in nature'. Nevermind the extremely complicated process of actually building a nuclear bomb! In any event, an atom, or any other bomb is MAN MADE, and delivered with a specific purpose in mind, by MAN.
Careful...!
Melaluca, or any other company, has an obligation to clearly spell out what is in their products, as concerns chemicals, allergens, or any other possible known harmful product, natural or otherwise.

The trouble I have noticed is that every Melaluca promoter goes on and on about how good their products are, with highly doctored statements as to how inexpensive they are, how Melaluca is 'not really an MLM, but CDM' etc. as 'proof'.
They of course have to MOVE these products in order to make MONEY, so this thread is filled with such advertisement/postings of how great their products are.
They ignore, or blow off criticism instead of effectively dealing with it, or admitting to ANYTHING possibly being wrong with Melaluca and/or its marketing approach.

I w0rk fr0m h0me and I am a Melaleuca Marketing Executive. I have been reading a bunch of posts from people who think Melaleuca is a scam or how they defraud you out of money. This couldn't be further from the truth.
Melaleuca is a wellness company and offers several different lines of products from Vitamins/Health & Fitness, Non-Toxic cleaning products which are safer & better for our homes & environment, make up for women, medicine cabinet alternatives & bathroom essentials - shampoo, conditioner, body wash, toothpaste etc.
For parents with children this company in my opinion is a no-brainer. I was given a presentation by my sister and her husband who has been involved with Melaleuca for 17 yrs. I am actively working the business and understand the program. Just like any other business you get out what you put in, but I know when I introduce these products that I'm doing this with confidence and know I'm enhancing someone's life and helping out environment at the same time.
The people who complain about Melaleuca are people who either had someone give them a poor presentation and they really didn't understand what they were signing up for...or they got in with the impression that they were going to make thousands of dollars a month and they didn't. I'm not saying you can't, but if you are not going to work at it and just slam the company I think it is completely unfair to both the company and the reader.
If you notice most of the people complaining always seem to say the same thing..."I liked their products and they do work, but..." that to me says - I get Melaleuca, but wasn't ready to work the business side, so trashed it in a forum anyway.
You get out of life what you put in...it stands for everything we do (or don't for some)

I am very thankful to have happened upon this forum. This is my first post. I keep looking for information on Melaleuca's product safety. I would like to know before I join if the products are truly as safe as the company promotes. I have invested considerable time researching the company and I have read many posts on the business. The company has solid corporate leadership and an impressive history. They have won multiple awards from the BBB, Inc 500, etc. Most people who are doing the business work hard for many years before they get to a high level of earning. There seem to be as many positive posts as negative ones. I would like to find some credible data on their product safety and find some proven training on how to work this business in conjunction with the internet. Can anyone help me find answers to my questions?

In response to "goforit", This is my first post to this forum as well. Good questions about Melaleuca~ There definately is scientific research on some of the specific products Mela manufactures/sells. You can first go to http://www.rmbarry.com/research/archives.html Don't bother to buy any material but you certainly can view alot of info here. FYI: Many times when people ask me how they know if Melaleuca products are safe my question to them is "How do you know that the products you are already buying, such as bleach, Tide, Ajax, Tilex, Cascade etc. are safe?" Most people just take it for granted that if it is in a store, it must be safe. I think most of us know that we don't know if they are safe and as a matter of fact, independent studies in the news confirm that they are dangerous or at least have poisonous ingredients. That being said, of course arguments can always be made, can't they?
As far as your second question on looking for some proven training on how to work this business, I can tell you that it is imperative to hook up with a team of successful marketing executives and model their success. Vague huh? I don't mean for that to sound vague or insincere but if there is one thing I have learned in my years working with such companies, it is imperative to find the leaders that are SINCERE, HONEST AND SUCCESSFUL. Make sure you are in their organization (and they will earn from your efforts) and then show them that you are serious about making money and will DO what needs to be done to reach YOUR goal. I enrolled in Mela in 1995 and have seen some significant changes over the years. Most good and of course some not so good. But...what I CAN say with complete confidence is that everything is available to earn long-term residual income. I KNOW that anyone serious can earn $500 their first month by following a pretty simple plan (and of course following through!!!!) The company has some pretty impressive tools.
You are so right, there is impressive history, multiple awards, people work hard to reach a high level of earning. With most other "reputable companies you will absolutely find postivie and negative posts most anywhere you look.
I hope I have helped with your questions. I am happy to point you in the right direction with anything further.

I had signed up with Melaleuca and received a Business Kit (which I had to pay for, even though I told the rep. I just wanted to try the products first). I would not sell anything I've never used first. I felt their products were way over priced and some I wasn't happy with. The one I really liked was "Nicole Millers" skin care.
What I hated was that you HAD to buy approximately (can't remember exact amount) $60 to $70 a month in product as a member and if you forgot to place an order, they automatically sent your order with whatever they picked or a preset order. This goes for members who also sell the products. I cancelled my membership after almost a year. To do this (at least at the time) it had to be in writing.

Thanks for your response to my post, Cheryl.
It seems that most people, even the ones that are not happy with the outcome of their business endeavors, really liked the products. I have not yet had my questions fully satisfied about product safety or ways to build a strong business.
I have also purchased a Coastal Vacations package and wondered if anyone has any tips about that business opportunity.
Thanks for 'listening'.

Hello Roachstalker
I have been doing all kinds of research on Melaleuca. I was wondering about the business side of it. My husband just lost his job recently and I was a stay at home mom before. I now have to find something that we can do from home that will help replace my husbands income. I don't have a lot of money to invest in something right now. I would like to be intrested in starting a business with Melaleuca. Can you tell me how to get started.

I worked for Melaleuca years ago, I loved the products, but wasn't too great at selling them. At the time they didn't give much advice on how to promote it online. Family was not interested, So I was buying products monthly for myself and some can be expensive. But I thought most of them were worth the money. So I dropped out as a distributor and remained a customer for awhile til I just couldn't afford it anymore. I am sure that now people are doing great selling this with all the free advertising and info on the web. they are still around aren't they!

Samsar: they are still around aren't they! I haven't a clue as to why that's relevant.
GM, CHRYSLER, etc. are 'all still around', but it ain't the customers making money! (ditto for AMWAY, CELL TECH, NONI etc....)
I'm sorry, but this seems to be a common MLM problem. Great products, but few folx make money selling them. The folx at the top do well though.
Yours seems to be the most common story.

A company should not require its customers to purchase a product if they choose to discontinue using it. We are trying to cancel our account and they are going to send us an order, even though they have not sent our order out yet, and we do not want the order. We made the mistake of not ordering last month and we received a bunch expensive stuff that we put on our first order.
If you want to change the backup order, you will need to do it on the phone (you can't change it online).
I am amazed at the process they require to cancel the membership. I have wasted over an hour. I have faxed them canceling my account (I challenge anyone to find the fax # on their site for canceling). After which I was informed that fax is not usually one of the methods they allow for canceling.
I have spoken with supervisors who after I made it perfectly clear that I do not want their product anymore; have attempted to tell me how wonderful their product is, and offered to explain the benefits.
From what I can see this company works very hard to prevent people from canceling memberships. If you read online you will hear of people who were not allowed to cancel for 4 months, faxes that were supposedly never received, and letters that were never received, the price is double what you can get elsewhere. The list goes on and on.
If you are still considering this company, I would suggest a great deal of caution, and possibly a trip to your local psychiatrist. .

My two experiences thus far with Melaluca are 1. a distributor contacted me from my meetup group about my MLM (Zrii) and got me on the phone and had me go through my entire proposal like she was a prospective customer. Then at the end, she tells me she sells Melaluca and that I should switch companies... etc., etc.
I was furious that my time had been wasted by someone who had no intention of looking at either my product or the associated business - and had downright deceived me in the process.
#2 occurred yesterday at a Business networking luncheon where a melaluca rep and her recruit essentially threw up tea-tree oil all over everyone at the table. They came on stronger than my Grandpa's old Avon cologne... They were all about their business and the company and blah, blah, blah...
If there's one thing I've learned working network marketing is that if you don't add value to someone's life - you're not being effective. The training and presentation skills that are being taught to these two women are irresponsible and highly ineffective.
If the first woman had wanted to join my team, I would have turned her down flat. This business (network marketing) isn't about numbers. It's not about how many people you enroll - it's about relationships and friendships and helping others improve their lives.
The Melaluca products may be fantastic - most network marketing products are - and honestly arguing that any product is better than another is merely semantics and juvenile.
What makes some home business succeed and others fail is not the company, but the ability, knowledge and desire to build a strong team and lead them to better the lives of others.

Hello all, Whew! This is the best forum thread I have ever seen and read so far about Melaleuca.
I am from Malaysia. We are going to start the business soon this year 2010.
Why I want to do Melaleuca's business? I heard from my up line for several months while I was still running a company and did something about internet network marketing that never me can succeed until now. Not all business is everyone cup of tea, I guess.
My up line never force me to join at all. I was just respect him for he waited Melaleuca for more than 2 years since 2006 after Melaleuca opened in Singapore in year 2006.He thought Melaleuca would opened in Malaysia in year 2007 but instead Melaleuca opened in China.Hence,he and his friends waited for few years.
Now,they are very excited and I am very excited too despite reading many pros and cons in this forum-"Thank you for you,Work- At- Home- Forum".I landed your wonderful forum through the my own search by typing "Melaleuca forum review".
We, in Malaysia is ready for Melaleuca. Our group is well-trained.I have gone through many repetitive free seminars and training until I understand fully of the system called CDM or Consumer Direct Marketing.I can differentiate the difference in between CDM vs MLM and I wrote on my blog.
CDM is no selling involve but mainly is through the "Word of Mouth Referral".No advertise through distribution, T.V,radio, supermarket, hypermarket etc. Save the advertisements fee and to be shared among consumers or business builders.
I love the business.I know my objective is enhancing the lives of those we touch by helping people reach their goals.I go out to find all my old friends and family relatives because I start to care about them. This business rocks! I begin to get back all my old school mates and work mates.Of course not everyone will join you. However, I didn't care much.I just willing to go out and meet more friends and more people. This helps me make more friends too.
I love this business is also because it is a no get rich quick scheme. You need a lots of effort at start vs ROI(income). I have a small graph to share here.
I have been through many seminars and trainings processes:- 1.Why switch brand and Melaleuca opportunity 2.Product trainings 3.Marketing plan 4.Down line placement 5.So on
My small advice for a Business Builder. 1.For preferred customer-Teach them how to use more than 30 types of Melaleuca products to maintain 35P every month. 2.For yourself-Try and use more than 80 plus Melaleuca products. This is to help you easier to recommend and guide your preferred customer for sustaining 35P each month. You need 4 to 6 months to serve every single preferred customer. This is because preferred customer is your ongoing income life time generator.
Hope these could help some. Have a great day to all. Henry

I am writing in response to everything here. I have just started with Melaleuca and I could not be happier! I havnt had this much energy in 4 years, I havnt gotten sick in over 3 months and with 2 little ones bringing germs from school everyday, that's a record! My first month in business, i made $200 and I know it will only increase! I believe any business can work for you, if you work it. Melaleuca's products are awesome...the price is inexpensive and you CAN make money. Feel free to look into it further! I'm so sorry it didnt work out for the giftlady up there, but not everyone can be happy with everything.
