I have been mystery shopping since 1996. Unless you live in a large city, don't believe the ads you see that say you make $300 a day and keep the merchandise you buy.
It's a fun side job. I started by buying a $19.95 book that gave me the name of a few companies to contact. However, in this day and age, you can find tons of mystery shopping sites for free on the net. Yes, pay is very good for the short amount of time it takes to do the shop and then submit the questionnaire. Some are very detailed and thus pay more. I mostly choose the ones where I can eat! Most of these reimburse you for the meal plus a bit extra. Some pay a flat fee. Most mystery shopping jobs pay a flat fee. I currently work for 8 to 10 kind of regularly. Many times your shops must be 45 to 60 days apart, so they don't recognize you. Some don't care how often you go in. Some shops are what they call 'reveal' shops where you check on whatever type of customer service they want, and if the associate does what he or she should do you 'surprise' them with a gift certificate or whatever the company gives you to give them. The Subway shops I have done are like this. Besides this, I've done Taco Johns, On The Boarder, Albertsons, Sonic, Chipotles, Mad Greens, BeauJo's Pizza, GoodTimes, Jiffy Lube, Starbucks, Carls Jr, etc.
So in short, these are for real jobs, most of the mystery shopping jobs I've done pay about 4 to 6 weeks after the job is done. Good luck and have fun shopping!
