I wanted to start this thread to get some feedback from the community on which one you would prefer doing???
I feel that affiliate marketing is easier with so many products out there to promote. Also you can create multiple income streams here.
MLM is great as well, but takes a little bit longer to get rewarded. But the residual income is definitely a plus.
Which one would you work with and why?

Dave, I would describe MLM as Affilliate Marketing on steroids!
Isuppose you would say I have chosen and work with a business model which is sort of in between the two. The model I chose was based on the fact that both MLM & affilliate marketing pay small commissions...i got sick of tiny cheques and downline attrition. This is even more of a problem now I fear as many people are leaving MLM and selling crappy affilliate products for the "Get Paid Today" model.

Affiliate marketing - hands down.
But I agree if you like the social aspect of marketing then mlm is a great way as well.
I am too independent and like to just work on the 'puter and have checks in the mail rather than mess with training and sponsoring.. been there done that and I even have a t-shirt to prove it.

Hi Dave,
Affiliate programs are great because it is like instant income coming to you on a weekly and monthly basis but I would encourage you that in the same time you build a network marketing organization so that one day, your income from your network marketing company will be able to replace your affiliate income.
Both are good, don't get me wrong but the income from your network marketing business will just grow and grow.
Tal

With both, you have to be a student of the sales process and learn marketing as your area of expertise.

MLM's seem to come and go like the wind and it can be revolving door recruiting down line members.
Look for an established company with good products. Same applies with affiliate marketing.

MLM for the socially inclined and natural born team leaders.
If you have a lot of friends and people praise you like a god, then more likely MLM is a good start.
Affiliate Marketing on the other hand, is for the poorly socialized ones but knows some technical know-hows and internet tactics.
Like me. LOL. I tried MLM before but it doesn't work for me cause I don't have a lot of friends to tell my story. With Affiliate Marketing you can make a blog, talk about your program in your blog and thus you'll create more followers.
I think Affiliate Marketing has more potential when it comes to recruiting people than MLM.

It doesn't matter which one you start with if you don't know how to get targeted traffic you won't make much money.
Multiple streams of leads equals multiple streams of income.

mountainmom5: Affiliate marketing - hands down. I am too independent and like to just work on the 'puter and have checks in the mail rather than mess with training and sponsoring Right on - I think you just about answered that question hands down...affiliate marketing is just that...marketing online. MLM or Network Marketing is a business and success only comes to those who treat it as a business and work their butts off.
I don't know if affiliate marketing is easier. To be successful in either takes certain skills. Those skills can be learned by anyone and mastered over time.
Building a successful Network Marketing business is a 1-3-5-7 year plan working 10 to 15 hours per week- it is not over night. As I was once told by a guru in the industry, those years will come and go whether you're building a business of not.
What I prefer doing is both..a Network Marketing business that is also an affiliate business. Duplication is what creates leverage (residual income) and leverage is what creates wealth.
Great question!

I went for network marketing after trying affiliate marketing and not having great success. I think network marketing is much easier for beginners.

Affiliate marketing is one of the easiest and cheapest ways to make money online. It's also one of the most aggressive. While not a get-rich-quick scheme, there are ways to ensure that you make the most out of your affiliate marketing program.
So what is the difference simply affiliate marketing offers commission on a per sale basis and in some cases offer transfer bonuses for new affiliates but do not allow you to get either money from their commissions (not quite true some offer a small percentage) nor any bonuses from subsequent members they recruit. However the commissions are usually much better then MLM schemes!

I think you may be right and here is why I think so. I did network marketing first and if you have a great support group and one that uses internet marketing to promote their mlm business or products, then you will learn a lot about the whole IM thing.

I like MLM... It is much faster to get yourself out in the industry. Network Marketing is the best way to exploit yourself.

If you can find a few affiliate programs like on Clickbank that will pay you a monthly recurring fee then that would be a little better then promoting just a one time payment product.
You can combine the 2 and make good money.

talfighel: You can combine the 2 and make good money. I'm with you on that one Tal ; other streams of income never harmed anyone.

I'm gonna co-sign Tal on this one as well, you won't ever meet someone who complains that they have multiple streams of income. Also, if you combine affiliate marketing and network marketing there is something else that is advantageous to you and that's BRANDING. If you offer a network marketing information product on the front end that EDUCATES prospects on the reality of this industry they will look to you as an authority figure and as someone who they can gain VALUE through association, this often makes for a lucrative business partnership...now imagine this process repeated EXPONENTIALLY

Hi Dave, This is a question that i have pondered many times myself. For me however, I like BOTH. And may i add that I pratice both. I use a niche in regard to products that will fit around my mlm opportunity. This way i am using a funded proposal to pay me up front, all while placing me in the neighbor hood with mlmer's.
Best of both worlds.
Thanks,
Wendell
