I am completely in agreement with Afaleye our guest here. Is it effective to try to build a downline by simply opening your mouth to everyone you come across? I think there is a big difference between efficiency and effectiveness. You can learn efficient communication skills and talk to everyone you encounter throughout the day. Maybe they will be interested in your "oppurtunity" or maybe they won't. But what if people who are specifically looking to start a home based buisness were to contact you? Wouldn't it be much easier to sponsor these people and wouldn't it be more likely that they are more motivated to succeed. These are the prospects we are looking for. Learn how to create you own marketing model to get yourself in front of this very crowd and watch your downline grow. Does it take work, yeah. But the results are worth it. Educate yourself and create a complete marketing system where your downline is just one source of income among many others. This forum for one is an educational tool for many. Golden nuggets of wisdom here. Thanks to everyone who provide such valuable information. And good luck to all who seek to improve!

These are excellent posts and points by everyone! I believe the key to building a successful downline in an MLM ultimately is YOU. Everything else previously mentioned is very important. However, if the person doesn't have that burning desire to succeed...they won't.
With that being said...duplicatable simple systems are the mainstay. It is all well and good for a new rep to sign someone up, but what does it matter if it stops there. Furthermore, people try to over complicate their systems and they say to much to the rep they signed up. Many times, that rep is telling himself; I can't do that. They quit before they even begin the journey.
People should keep it simple. After the initial communication, they shoud be sent to a marketing system such as: 3-way call; website video, webinar, teleconference and so on. DON'T try to sell the person on the business. That will just confuse them and tell them that I can't DO that.
Set a time to call them back and FOLLOW-UP. Ask them what they liked about what they saw, heard, read. Be quiet and let them talk. They will give you reasons why they want to do the business. Remember it's not about you. Get yourself out of the way.
Objections are a test to see how much you believe in your business. Have strong posture and don't waffle.
After you see they are a good fit for your business, say something like welcome to the team! If they are negative or a tire kicker, kick them to the curb. There are plenty more where they came from.
A majority of my marketing is done online. Marketing is marketing. You still have to send them through a system. If you do that and keep it simple you will have a much higher retention rate.

The most important thing that you can do to build a successful downline is to be trustworthy. If you say you are going to do something.... Then do it! Your prospects and your new recruits must be able to come to know you, they must like you and trust you. Whether you do this online, in person and/or over the phone, you have to be trustworthy and you must provide value to all your prospects. You need to be able to solve a problem that they have and you must provide a method for them to solve that problem.

Great comments
My two cents is alot of mlm marketers focus to much on offering their product or service instead of their value. By this I mean a lot of time people are all hype about what a product can do and most of the time have no real results of their own to share with others. And for mlm choices be sure it's something you are passionate about and not just in it for the compensation plan. People join people not companies and if you offer your prospects a true connection instead of a sales pitch your downline will grow beyond you could ever imagine and it would be full of loyal friends instead of unmotivated, sizzled out, zeros in your back office.
Give from a servants heart and reap a great reward!

The key to building a successful MLM is to find a system that works, that does all the lead generation and recruiting for you. The only thing required on the users end is to drive the traffic.

Here are some good points you guys and gals are making, the only thing that I would say is to focus on building that relationship with your potential client. Be passion about what you doing and actually use and believe in what you promoting.

Yes, keep in touch with your downline, it is very important. Most of the time people leave an mlm system or program because of the lack of sponsor communication. I tell people to stay focus with their downline.

Just thought I'd add: The 7 must have's to be successful at Network Marketing. 1. You must take ownership of your own business. 2. You must be marketing a legitimate product or service. 3. You must be in a position to be able to duplicate and train others to do the same. 4. You must have and/or become a visionary within your business. 5. You must start at the top, and build your business down, with people just like you. 6. You must invest time and money into your business. 7. You must work! Quote for the day: Proper planning prevents poor performance! See you at the top! Sharon

I agree with everything you've said Sharon. Those are excellent points for anyone new to consider. I think really communicating with your downline on their goals is important. Effectively being able to put together an action plan based on what they want to achieve is key. Early success builds confidence and belief. Get them some legs in the first 30-90 days, as well as some retail profit they are more likely to take ownership of their business.

coreyjroman: Although there are literally thousands of MLMs out there... the one real key to building a successful downline in any of them is to be involved in an organization that provides a product or service that "YOU" believe in. Wow, you certainly have had a few replies to your original post.
Belief is a big part. But I also believe each individual that manages to stick in there (and not quit) will do this by finding his or her own way of doing things that works for them.
Whether they choose to connect via face to face, phone, Facebook prospecting systems or whatever. Once they find their way of connecting, it will be hard to hold them back...

One of the beauty of network marketing and mlm is that you have a proven plan that works in most cases. You able to start your business at a low cost and you have your upline for support. Now if you don't have a strong upline then that's not a good business to be in.

So I just got into network marketing! I am having a lot of trouble building my down line. I spend at least four hours a day posting to everything I possibly can and have had no luck so far! I am starting college in January majoring in marketing! Any suggestions to get things going? Oh and none of my warm market is interested at this time!

The biggest mitigating factor in anyone having success working from home is their ability to create leads. Creating leads cost money. The days of having success posting on craigslist and backpage of 5 years ago are over. Free advertising is you get what you pay for type of stuff. It is passive advertising. I believe all businesses whether networkers or small brick and mortar businesses need to be aggressive and go out there and create their own leads. Yes it does cost money but you have to treat this like a business. I spend 500 on advertising, I create 100 leads, I can close 4 out of those 50 and I make 2000. Whatever the numbers are
The key is about sending a targeted message to a targeted list telling them what they want to hear. Being able to mass market to those lists is the key. So many people join a home based business and are not liquid enough to run it properly and that is a shame. You have to learn lead generation first to build a big downline.

trisha1030: So I just got into network marketing! I am having a lot of trouble building my down line. Oh and none of my warm market is interested at this time! Hi, whoever sponsored you into your network marketing enterprise has an obligation to work with you until you get up and running on your own.
Go to the next upline sponsor if things are not working. The thing to remember is there are many systems to grow downlines out there and by diverting off your network marketing companies methods you could be sending confusing messages to your downline when things start to happen.
Make sense?

Corey you have nailed it. You couldn't have said it better. Building a downline can be so hard that it cause people to quit the MLM business but that is because they choose the wrong products. To have a great MLM business you will have well known products and the company will motivate their distributors constantly with meetings in the different cities and encourage the distributors to become a product of the product; that is use the products so you can successfully promote them. I am a part of something like that and it is working and their products are amazing.

coreyjroman Hello,
Some really good info posted. I think that it is really important to stay in touch with your downline and to let them know that you are always available to help them if they need it. Also I set up a success site for my team with steps for success. This is information that I feel will help them on their journey to success. Have a great day!

I would have to agree! You have to believe in the product! If you don't believe in the product then it will be hard to promote it and then people will see that in you.
