villagran: I think when your trying to get people to join your downline you have to try and sell them on you not on the company you want to them join. Its been my experience that people join people not company's. Not really. Sure you want them to like you because that is also important but if they are not hungry enough to do this in order to change their current situation then they will not.
There is an old saying:
You can drag a horse down to the lake, but you can not make it drink the water.
You can be a good person and people can like you but if they don't take action because of lack of motivation then they will not do anything.
Tal

Don't be to quick to build... sounds crazy but... What if you where a CEO of a Corporate Company (you are YOU INC.) Would you want just anyone to work for your Company? No. It's the same thing in networkmarketing You don't want just anyone Qualify them don't persuade or close them (then you have persuade them to stay) Don't be scared to tell them I don't think this is for you
Allow only people to join that REALLY show desire

Mike McClurg Love the post Mike. I agree with you. Too many people are looking at Network Marketing as a way to "get rich quick" and when it doesn't happen, they get negative and that can pull down the rest of your organization. It's more effective to qualify those looking for an opportunity and decide if the "fit" is right for both of you. It's not a guarantee but has better odds of success.
All the best to you, Ginger Hogue

I am in agreement with both Mike and Gingerva, but I must say that I disagree with Network Marketing NOT being a "get rich quick" option. Sure, what was intended was that one, more than likely, cannot get rich over night, but if it takes 10 years to get rich, that is still quick when compared to the traditional route (a J.O.B.), which will more than likely never happen.
The downfall of the industry is those with unrealistic expectations. Truth be told, the companies don't matter, the products don't matter and the compensation plans don't matter. At the end of the day, those who get involved must be willing to become a different person. If not, their results won't be different!

I think the 80 / 20 rule is important to keep in mind. The reality is most people who join programs don't stick with it or work enough.
Keeping in touch is important, making yourself available, but since you only have so much time, focus it on those who are making the effort. Even if their results are not there, if they are making the effort you owe it to them.
(For the sake of newbies I'll state the rule... The 80/20 rule is 80% of your downline profits will come from 20% of your people. So, for the most part, give 80% of your time to the 20% who are putting in the effort.)

Hello, Great feedback here so I wanted to add... Any person trying to promote an MLM or Business in general needs to remember that you have to be available and out there for others.
Attraction Marketing has been around for a long time and people sometimes forget that your first online/email words to someone else is your "handshake"! After that is is up to the resources, tools and attitude that will create a powerful downline for you. Some people are attracted to you, some to the product, some to the comp plan so you need to know how to approach and attract those people.
All of us want to work with others similar to our own personalities so be the kind of team lead that YOU would like to have!

Great posts. I already have made some decisions to increase my leads through a business opportunity I opted in on recently, however, my primary mlm is falling short on distributor support from what I have read in these posts. I have made a call to my company to see if we can't correct this problem, and give more up front support to our distributors. I feel this would help bring in more excitement and business more quickly for all involved.

Hi All This is my first post. It has been interesting reading through all your comments. I must add, that I agree with Bosco, the 80/20 rule is a great idea and makes good bussiness sense. I am also taking my first baby steps in a new work direction, I am sure that it is going to bring good results for myself and those that get involved. To our success..

Wow, tons of great information and advice here. Some people seem to sprint and do well and others seem to do well taking their time. I guess the right thing depends on the kind of person you are.

I have been in the industry for 4 years now and until about a year ago I experienced very little success. Therefore, I now know that the key to success is finding a powerful system. I dont mean a system where you phone your friends and invite them to opportunity meetings! Most people who do this have very little success.
I mean harnessing the Internet. The web should be the primary marketing tool in any MLM business (in my opinion!). To be successful you have to do what top producers are doing, not an upline sponsor who only makes fractionally more than you. Fortunately (again due to the Internet) you can now access training from the industry's heavy hitters and that is absolutely the key to success.
Follow people who have achieved what you want to achieve and you will shortcut you own learning curve to success :)

Good info on 80 20 rule, which applies to everything in your business. As an example, 20% of the activities you carry out in your business will produce 80% of the results. That is why you must identify your profit and income producing activities and concentrate more of your time on those activites rather than the activities that dont produce leads or profits.
The longer you are in the industry, the easier it will be for you to identify your income producing activites. Regardless of what some uplines teach, I dont consider calling my friends and family to be one of the top 20% of activities when it comes to producing income! Finding and targeting interested prospects produces better results, hands down

I have to say I am a product of selling on the upline, not the product. Don't get me wrong, the product is great, but the person who signed me up has been so supportive and helpful. He has been there all the way and has promised to be there throughout the whole process. I feel I can trust him and that he really will lead me in the right way to go. Best wishes to you all. Diane

I just joined an amazing company still in pre-launch. I prolly won't see money until June, but that means I can build slowly and be picky about who I choose to be on my team. I love that kind of power! lol

You also need to have a positive attitude all the time. Create a goals cards and carry them everywhere you go and read them all the time. That way, you are going to re-program your mind for success and release any negative stuff that is stored in your mind.

crystaldunn123 There are entire courses on how to drive traffic to your website just using social networking alone. I have been experimenting with Twitter. I check my counter totals on my website before and a few hours after I post something and record which phrases brought the most people. Members there don't want to be sold to just like anywhere else so I created an inexpensive personal website concerning another subject altogether....Humor. I have humorous stories, videos and a blog to attract those who like that sort of thing. I also have a tab for my business farther down the menu. It's fairly new and I'm still experimenting but I have been amazed at the number of hits I've received. And there have been requests for information about the business as well. But it is not a direct link straight to my business site on our first meeting. Forming a relationship with people first has always worked for me. Good Luck!

Great point Tal about the positive attitude. I break hourly to state affirmations. When caught up in the hustle and bustle of daily living you tend to forget what you're working towards: goals.
Another tidbit: Never stop meeting people. All day long! A Hilton quote stated that a method he used to become successful was to get up in front of many people as possible. You never know the networks of each person you meet, who will be interested in you, and who you'll build a valuable relationship with.
Facebook, twitter, myspace, forums, blogs, use each one of them to expand your network.

First of all, make sure that you get advantage of the advances of technology and how it can significantly improve your results in network marketing. More specifically, when you combine the Internet with network marketing, you have a powerful arrangement of the 2 worlds that is unparalleled compared to the 'traditional' marketing methods. You also will want to make sure that you align yourself with the top leaders within the industry. These are individuals who are well know all through the Internet marketing community to have achieved a high level of success in MLM down line building and have the ability to effectively show others how to attain the same success (because its all about helping others, right?).
