To me a video email is a real video that opens and plays right in the email itself. It IS a cool effect and unless the video is very short the file size gets to be a problem with most email clients.
A video that is a picture you click on to watch a video hosted elsewhere is not a video email. It is an HTML email with a graphic still-shot or icon which is linked to a video hosted on a server. A text email with a link will serve as well - just let the recipient know they can get gratification by watching the video - clickthrough rates on emails with "video" in the subject line tend to be pretty good.
An email is a file - it is sent from one computer to another. It may call graphical content from elsewhere, like JPGs and GIFs - but unless it's a picture of something the content is sent as a text or HTML file. The more information there is, the bigger the file.
A true embedded video in an email has a significant file size and most email clients will block it with the notable exceptions of (if I recall) Outlook Express 2 and 3 - they are blocked by gmail, yahoo, later versions of IE, Thunderbird, just about everything.
Embedded Gifs can work directly in the email. No sound though. Still a cool effect. I use 'em.
Gmail and Google have a new feature that may make YouTube videos viewable in Gmail emails

And here is how to use faux-video GIFS in email and actually have the animation play in the video itself - http://www.aweber.com/blog/email-marketing/new-way-to-send-video-emails.htm
I hope this clarifies.

Have just joined the video promotion ranks today in fact and have sent out my first video with traffic fusion.
Not sure of results yet will check tommorow but video must be good since best article directory ezinearticles.com is ranked 758 by alexa and then you have google video, you tube and yahoo video all ranking in the top ten sites of alexa.
Would love to hear about people's conversion rates from their videos and wether better conversions from their own home made videos or using their company's generic videos

I think its very effective. People can see that you are a real person and that what you are presenting to them on camera is more likely to be real like if its a physical product. Furthermore, they can get a better impression of you through video rather than from reading text such as an email.
It also works 24/7 when you upload it up to a video site. Just buy a flip cam around $100 and you're ready to go.

I have been using Vmail for over 2 years in my businesses which has improved my conversion rates from text emails by about 22% from enquiry to close.
However, I not only use video of myself, but promotional videos and even Power Point presentations.
As an income stream it pays me hundreds a week for about 10 hours input, but I have been doing it for a long time and have many distributors.

I have yet to get into video marketing but my friends that have implemented it into their advertising are seeing great results. I finally have written exactly what I want to say without sounding scripted and fake. People have to feel like they know you from watching.

Video marketing CAN work very well....tons of ways to use it, but ....be forewarned..
I do know quite a few people who have been using it who have been banned by YouTube recently, so just some food for thought....years of work down the tubes.

You do not need to be a video professional or an actor or a celebrity to be effective using videos for your marketing. Video marketing is hot and is here to stay and if you feel comfortable doing videos you will be on top of your game and on top of your competition. Always Test, Test Test and Test...! Lack of marketing knowledge is the only thing that's keeping people from being successful online.
