Retention in network marketing seems to be a big problem. We hear it all the time, "why do they quit?" I didn't get it in the beginning but then again what did I know, right? It was more like the blind leading the blind back then.
Recently I was listening to a training CD from Pro Eric Worre and what I learned was the absolute key to retaining your downline is for them to have small victories fast in the beginning. It makes sense...having success early on would get me fired up!
So what does that mean? That could mean having a good experience with your product, hearing a success story, going to a meeting and meeting someone who shares their story, sponsoring a new customer, listening to a training call, or having someone special in their life say, "I'm behind you on this."
Watch out! There is a 7-day timer on their back. We have 7 days to make sure they have several small victories or they are gone. If we continue to encourage them...reminding them why they joined and that they made a good decision, we have a much better chance of hanging onto them.
What do you think?

Hi Ginger,
This is wise insight. I don't feel that there's a set limit or timer for people. One wants to see results in the first hour while another might think 1 - 3 months is a reasonable time frame. We seek to do our best job making new prospects as successful as quickly as possible. Foster a success consciousness into your team's mindset and this will happen naturally.
This is why I've penned multiple ebooks of my own motivational quotes. My team members can turn to me for inspiration because most of my quotes were written at a time when I lived off of the $1.00 food stand at the local Walgreens. If I could do it, they can, and will! Persistence is the difference maker.
Thanks for sharing!
Ryan

Every 7 days may be unrealistic depending on the expectations.
A big contributor to losing team members is that too often people join the business with unrealistic immediate expectations of what needs to be done to grow their business, along with consistently applying various marketing strategies, in order to make good income.
In this economy too many are looking for something to replace a full time income, and that is not going to happen instantly. Now putting in solid effort for a year possibly could with a viable business. Unfortunately, too many don't have the wisdom to endure to achieve that success. However, getting some quick positive activity/results does help lay a foundation for success.
Network marketing is awesome once you get the cash flowing but you have to understand what needs to be done and be about doing it for time period to have success.

My experience has been the products are not good enough to keep people if they are not making money within a reasonable enough time. I think someone said 3 months and that is about right.
Not to say MLM products are bad but most are not spectacular enough for the price.

I think staying in touch with your people every few days just to see how they are doing. Not to pester them about the business but asking if you can help them in any way if they have any questions?? How is their family doing. You did bring them into the business because you want to success and you want to see them succeed as well. At least that is my hope for my team. I don't think I am being unrealistic. Some people will leave anyway but at least I know it wasn't because I ignored them or didn't try to help them. Each person is important or should be they are YOUR team.

Hey Ginger,
We have to make sure to work with our prospects. And not just tell them what to do. But try being with them until they see a little success.
So you are exactly right.. Small successes in the beginning make or break a person unless their dreams keep them going.

I get what you are saying...it is exactly how I use to feel. I thought "hey, it's your business..I'm just here to help" however, I had to re-build my organization 3 times. What I was doing clearly wasn't working.
So I decided to get some "expert" advice from a 1million dollar a year income earner. People in the beginning are excited and also fearful so we need to make sure they have success early on - his words, not mine.

I agree with Ginger that it's important for new referrals to have small successes every week. I noticed in a lot of the posts people referred to her comment and the word success to mean a sale or new referral but it could be as simple as the spouse supporting them in their new business. If you can't get a spouse to back your new referral then you really will have problems.
My point is this, it's important for people to feel successful especially during their first few years in network marketing. The more small success stories you can give your new referral the more successful they'll feel and the more successful they'll become as a result.
We all know that we are products of our thoughts anyway so why not plant successful thoughts in the minds of your referrals?
