I've been surfing the web and seeing info about building a network marketing home business without having to pick up the phone...any thoughts?

There are many good companies online that can actually give you and each person in that company a splash page that collects names and emails and does the follow up for you without you ever calling anyone.

Yes you can build a network without using the phone, depending on the business. Phone contact is the number #1 closer in network marketing according to the LeadersClub research. Also phone follow up can make the difference between a successful downline and do-nothings. Personally? The phone is a distraction and mostly for whiners who need hand holding. Give me the self starters who can create their own path to success. Then it is a pleasure to talk with your downline instead of a drain. It's a personal choice but the phone is the choice of pros. It works best if you can get them to call you first. Calling old cold leads is usually a waste of time.
It really depends on what you are promoting.

I agree. The phone is a very useful tool for the business person. It also makes it more personal than e-mail or text. The next best thing i think would be video-conferencing and then face-to-face. One thing to think about Alaina, is to use whatever tool you can to build your business efficiently. There is a time and place for everything so having a phone conversation with a prospect usually means they are one step closer in the process.

My experience is that with network marketing you need to make contact with your team members at some point but with affiliate marketing you don't.... I moved to affiliate marketing for that very purpose. I'd rather just get up in the morning, check my emails and make money.

History proves that those that will pick up the phone in their networking biz make the most money in the most lucrative home business arena of mlm.
Now does that always mean you have to initiate the call, no. I let all my team members know that having a phone number where a person can call you is wise. I have referred a many to my biz just because they could get in contact with me via phone, and others were trying to be "just email me" home business owners.
That being said, if you want to explode your mlm home business and your bank account I'd suggest you pick up the phone first, as often as possible, and simply contact the prospect and "say hi".
Let people know in this impersonal world that you are a real person and will be there to support them to the best of your ability to help them succeed. When you do that people will be delighted to join with you. When one tries to be an automated-robot they tend to find themselves not having the success that makes people like me really love the untouchable blessings that a network marketing home business can manifest on a daily, weekly, monthly and yearly basis.
All the best, and much success

I agree too. I've only been in Networking marketing for about 8 months now, and I've quickly learned (the hard way) that the main component to building your business is keeping in constant contact with your prospects and downline.
I was first exposed to network marketing, but after researching the online marketing scene in general, I found many other areas like affiliate marketing.
So to agree with mountainmom5, I think affiliate marketing is more ideal for those who do not want to bother hassling others and just refer people to products.
I'm currently trying to experiment with both areas.

I have always believed that you can do the smaller/lower cost network marketing programs without picking up the phone. Would recommend a strong auto-responder campaign to have any success. The larger/higher costs programs require cultivating a strong relationship and that can be difficult without telecommunications. It can be done but the enrollment rate will go down. Best of luck!
