The past few days I've been getting comments on my blogs with...
URL's for Bing.com, Yahoo.com , and even Google instead of spam links.
I suspect they are doing it to "get approved" so they can post future spam.
Ain't gonna work with me since ALL comments have to be approved individually.
Anyone else noticing that on their blogs?
First time I've seen it happen.

3 things I noticed, all have only one name, no first and last from any of them
and all are one sentence, most with one dyslexically misspelled word.
The IP addresses are ALL different and some are from universities.
They are still coming in right now. Not in mass, just one at a time.
I think they are hunting for sites that allow approved commenters unlimited comments.
I learned long ago not to play that game, even my comments must be approved by me.
p.s. I did allow a few to post just because they are ALL complimentary, lol.
So what if I pass page rank to Bing and Yahoo? Not that I have any to pass.

Not here. However, as a publisher, you must be aware of one setting that's ignored by most and spammers have become smart enough to exploit this.
In Settings > Discussions, you must uncheck this:
"Comment author must have a previously approved comment"
It is checked by default. What some smart spammers do is that they make a genuine post first and once that is approved, they post spam links, which goes un-noticed.

I don't see how UNchecking the "Comment author must have a previously approved comment" option makes the situation any better. If anything, it makes the situation worse by allowing a user's first comment to sail right on through.
If someone has their blog set up to where every single post has to be approved by the admin, then this setting is irrelevant either way.
I understand that there are plugins you can use for Wordpress that will allow you to set the number even higher... i.e. a user must have THREE approved comments before they can freely comment without moderation.

Not at all. Vishal was referring to a default setting that allows repeat comments.
The first comment still has to be approved by the admin.
Many posters come here and post once nicely, then spam once approved.
Vishal has to work hard to keep up with it some days.

It doesn't make the first comment sail through. It makes the subsequent comments sail through once the first comment has been approved.

I have been getting ALOT of spammers to my blog. I thought having the captcha would help, as well as me having to manually approve comments but apparently not.... I will look into some of the things mentioned by Vishal.

They're back, and they are making me dizzy!
Every SINGLE NAME commenter misspells ONE WORD.
Different words but only one word is dyslexically written.
Such as "excelelnt" or "outstanidng" or... you get the piont.
Drives me nuts trying to figure out the nuances and who what when where why.
Is there a reason they always misspell only one word?

Look, the bottom line is that everyone who comes to your site have one GOAL in mind. Yes, they need to post something interesting but at the end of the day everyone wants to get backlinks to their website.
I think that even though people come to do this on other people's blogs, you will benefit from those posts in the future.
You can approve them or not. It is really your choice. I never wanted to have a blog where people comment. And I will never do it.

LOL, obviously you haven't visited my sites?
One goal? Not even close, 99% are NOT looking for backlinks.
The topics are varied so "one goal" sure doesn't apply to all visitors.
Very few of my visitors leave comments or try to place backlinks.
Most of the sites I manage are "blogs" only because they use WordPress.
WordPress can be used to make non commenting sites also.
It's just the ones I have open to comments that get hit.
Comes and goes in waves, almost a weekly schedule.
