Hello, I was wondering if we could just make a thread of successful actions for getting more traffic to a website or blog. That means, everyone writes down what they have done that has been the most successful in getting more traffic to a site.
I can write mine, though I hope there are more I haven't thought about:
Article Submissions Manual Directory Submission Services
Are there more I should know???

Surprisingly enough, apart from those already mentioned, I get a good dose of traffic from these two sources.
Yahoo Answers and Google Images
1. Yahoo Answers - just search for questions relating to your site topic and then give good and thorough answers (not one liners) to the question and leave a link in the source box provided. Warning: There are a few cowboys on there that will report you for spam even if you are not going against the guidelines. They don't like affiliate links, so I wouldn't recommend this unless you have a genuine site address to post.
2. Google Images - be sure your photos on your site have appropriate alt tags using the keywords in the description. Google has been sending a lot more traffic to my site lately as a result of image searches.
The others that were mentioned already, of course, I agree with, except I will say that I although I use free classifieds for the link, I have never really generated much traffic from them apart from craigslist.
Honestly, most of my traffic comes from organic searches as Newbie Shield listed as the number 1 source. That is the most important one to aim for. Continue to build good quality keyword focused content pages and that will automatically happen for you.
Hope that helps.

Newbie shield is awesome.
Everyday I post on Craigslist and Backpage. I also use some traffic exchanges.
Just these free methods leave me in enough leads to keep me busy every single day. I use a leads capture system and I promote a Web 2.0 tool that is different from anything else out there (there are 2 very wealthy celebrities that use this service) so getting leads from people who already market on the Internet has been ideal.
Just be consistent with whatever you do. Don't try a million different things once, get really good at just a couple.
Plus, you're already doing one way to get links back to your site. You're posting on forums. you're on the right track by asking people instead of just trying to figure it out alone. I truly believe that to be successful, you need help.
Good luck and don't give up. It will come.

Blogging and then social bookmarking for search engine bait. This is proving to be a great source for long term traffic as I am getting on page one of Google for various keyword phrases very quickly.

I want to concur that free classifieds DO WORK !! I've already had tremendous success with them, and in a very short time.
Quoting: Newbie Shield figure out ways to get a linkback from a higher PR site
I also want to suggest another possible avenue of directing traffic that is a good example of one of Newbie Shield's recommendations: purchasing leads. There are many companies that offer inexpensive and qualified leads that are sent right to your site. But look for a company that guarantees exclusivity for the product, business type or company you are "selling". You don't want your leads being sent to your competitors.
I researched many companies before subscribing with one that suited my needs. I've had over 50 direct hits to my site in 48 hours with 5 sign-ups! And the other 45 are now in my database for follow-up.

Great thread... Newbie Shield is definitely on top of his/her game.
One method that was not mentioned yet though is the use of Squidoo. Squidoo has a pretty good PR and is ideal for backlinks. After I create a lens on Squidoo, it is usually indexed on either the first or second page of Google within 3-5 days.

pcwork- In recent months it seems Google is putting a lot more focus on images. They often show a few at the top of the search results page.
I have a lot of images on my sites, at least one per page. Some people are specifically looking for images, and others just click on them when they see them in the search results.
When you use a relevant photo on your page and include the keywords in the image description, you are more likely to draw traffic for that image.
Does that clear it up a bit for you?

One way is that the images show up in Google Images and people click on them.

Look at what keywords are being used to get to your site and create content that accentuates those. I wouldn't say it is my top way but it does boost my traffic over time. My organic traffic though is 30% compared to my traffic from referalls.
