Hi,
A question for the gurus. What are sales like during the holiday season from paid advertising? Is it best to wait until the holiday Christmas season is over?

Hi David,
The peak sales months of the year are Nov, Dec, Jan, Feb, and to a slightly lesser extent - Oct and Mar.
Halloween, Thanksgiving, Christmas, New Years, Valentine's Day, St. Patrick's Day, and Easter all fall within these months.
So, the Christmas season, which is flanked by each of the above holidays, is the highest sales period of the entire year.
I would turn up the marketing volume to 10 - including paid and unpaid - during these months. Now is the time to really push it to the max provided you have planned well and have a framework in place to accommodate one or more campaigns.
Can't do it this year then start preparing for next year at first opportunity.
Christmas is HUGE. Don't pass it up

It depends on the product you are selling

I would only suggest paid (PPC) advertising if you really know what you are doing - PPC advertising can be very profitable, but it can also put a hole in your wallet. If you do decide to jump into PPC advertising, make sure to bid on keywords that are as specific as possible - maybe product related keywords if you are promoting a specific kind of product, such as a brand and model of a camera or something to that effect. Whatever you do, don't go too broad on your keywords - as a rule of thumb, the more words that are in the keyword phrase you use, the more targeted that usually are - I'd say to bid on keywords that consist of AT LEAST 3 keywords. But really, there is a lot more to PPC advertising than the little blurb I just created, so I'd suggest waiting to do PPC advertising when you have more experience.
Having said all of that, you might want to check out USfreeads.com - you can get unlimited ads for about $10 a month - your traffic won't be earth shattering, but it is probably a better option for you than PPC advertising at this point...

My sales generally ramp up in September and slow back down in March. This is the time to be marketing whatever you have.
Pay Per Click advertising can be a virtual atm after you get it figured out. Until then it can be a bottomless pit for your money. I would definitely recommend getting some training in ppc before going all out with it. I learned a lot from Perry Marshall's google adwords book. Do a search for it and you should find something, if not send me a message and I can give you the site I purchased it from.
But definitely do some heavy marketing now.

I usually don't spend a lot of time filtering ads, but today one on my sites had an unusually low click
through rate. I checked it out and and there is one ad pretty spammy ad taking up many of the ad spots.
Even though it is the same ad text, they are using many different URLs.
We also some times came across many sites which offer Free Online Advertising, Free Online Marketting,
Free Internet Marketing, Free Advertising...etc. Are they provide the services for free??
Is anyone else having this problem? The topic really isn't even related to my site very much.
Thanks and regards Advtmedia.com

Hi srikanthb,
You should be able to filter your Adsense ads via use of negation.
For example, if you don't want anything with the word "free" showing up, use "-free".

Google Adwords has obviously become very expensive and therefore much harder to make a profit but what about some of the minor search engines? Some of them are offering bids of between 1 to 5 cents. Does anyone have any experiences with them? Is the quality of traffic from them on a par with Google?
Some of these search engines were offering guaranteed visitors. Has anyone had experience with these?

Hi Guys,
After I posted my previous reply I noticed a link was added on my comment. A link to 7search.com This site is relevant to my questions. Does anyone have any experience with 7search.com? Good or bad?

David,
David: Is the quality of traffic from them on a par with Google?
Hi David,
Yahoo and Microsoft have quality ad networks as well. Not all ad networks offer quality traffic. Some networks send lousy traffic and some even send bots but you might experiment for a week or so on a few lesser networks.
If you can find one that is honest and worthwhile, you'd save quite a bit on PPC. Be sure to check your logs and monitor conversions. Let us know if you find any.
Good luck,

Don't forget about running content ads as well. You can usually run a lower cost per click than a search ad. Just do some research first to find out which websites your ads get displayed on. (I exclude MySpace from my google content ads)
The downside is that someone might not be thinking about your product/service at the exact time like with search, but if you can tweak your ads right, you can get on sites that compliment your products/services, which will get you better conversion rates.

Oh man paid advertising for the holiday season is where hundreds of thousands are made in online businesses.
Basically around September-March is like prime time for home businesses because people are in the house more, on their computers, looking for something to start to change their life.
Paid advertising such as PPC, Solo Ads, Offline Marketing work extremely well especially during this time.
