Has anyone had any good experiences marketing their online program through print?(Magazines or Newspapers?)
I see alot of those opportunity mags at Borders and wondered if those attract a lot of high quality prospects.
Thanks in advance everyone!

I have done some advertising in small local newspapers. The results have been mixed. I've gotten great response from some and zero from others. I do think it is good to take some of your marketing efforts offline though. Just make sure whatever publication you use has an adequate circulation and the desired demographics.

Thats my problem.
I am having problem checking the demographics of the desired papers. My local papers are no good so I have to do research on other papers.
The circulation is the easy part to check. Thanks for the input.

I have not advertised in newspapers, actually I haven't done any offline advertising. I was told that newspapers have such a broad range of readers and most aren't looking to get into a home based business, so it's not your "target market" when advertising your business. That's what my business teaches, how to market effectively without wasting time and money on things that will bring very mixed or no results. Now with home based business type of magazines, you would most likely get better results, it's expensive, but your results would be much better being that it's in front of your target market. Hope that helps!

Thanks for your reply.
It seems it would be a bit difficult to find a suitable newspaper without actually doing alot of research.
I think I will stick to home based publications only. I have some extra ad dollars that I want to test but I do not want to throw them away.

I think, too, that it varies as I have placed ads locally with not much result and then other times I would get more.
I have had more success with real short ads - like interest sparking ads than with more informational ones.
I ran one by mistake once that was misprinted to read, "Directions needed in this area. Need an extra $3000 a month.call xxx-xxx-xxxx" and I got more response from that ad than any other!
I had a garbage disposal guy that called and he said he figured, "What the heck, I know the area inside and out and if I can make money giving directions, I'll go for it..." lol
That turned out to be a fun ad to get calls from as people were curious what it was!

People think that newspapers have more credibility than the internet, so they believe in those ads.

I was thinking about the credibility thing also.
I was also thinking that someone could cut out your ad and save it for a convenient time to go online and check out your business.
I do know that consistency is key with print. I use print(clipper magazine) with my auto care business. After the 2nd month is when we saw a huge increase in traffic from the ads(they only print once a month)
So I am thinking that once a person sees your ad 2 or 3 times they may be compelled to answer the ad.

You're right Mountainmom, there's still alot of people who read the paper front to back, but they're not usually business seekers. People don't usually buy a paper becuse they're looking for a business, they buy one because they're looking for a job or they want to read about the local happenings. It's just not as consistent as marketing to your target market online. I just wouldn't waste the money on that when you can get better results with other forms of marketing. JMHO.

Newspaper ads are tough. Stick with craigslist or backpage for best results.

One good thing about newspapers is that now that there is more competition for advertising dollars, we are seeing that more papers are having to get competitive on pricing. Just this week California lowered a statewide ad run by over $100! The marketplace is forcing the newspapers to be competitive and this is good for our advertisers!! I welcome this change.

Hello,
1. Use classified networks to reduce your cost per insertion 2. Commit to 6 consecutive issues to have a real measure (remember people don't take action on your ad until they've seen it 5 times) 3. Use adtracking 4. Use a landing/squeeze page that matches your compelling ad 5. Use an autoresponder/lead capture system on squeeze page 6. Use audio/video in your follow ups to increase interest 7. Include your phone number in the follow ups if it's a product over $250 (or outsource to inbound telemarketers).
It all works if targeted and done properly.

I think It is old marketing style...
Yes, still there are many people buy and read newspapers,
But, you are paying same amount as the time more people subscribed
new papers.
I mean, Your investment amount is same as past,
subscribers of news paper are very shrunk these day because of
internet news!!
Anyway, nothing worse than do nothing~
Good luck
Happy day~^^

Free shopper papers like you are considering can do phenomenally well. We have placed our clients into networks of these nationwide. It is cheap circulation with good readership. Providing you have good ad copy and run consistently, you should do well!

Print ads do have a good degree of credibility, but it comes at a cost.
You really have to be careful to make sure you have a good strategy for getting a return on your investment, as the ads can be expensive and if you don't get the return you need it will just be a money drain.

I have worked in print advertising for 17 years and Tim is right, it can be expensive if not done correctly. Nothing is worse than having an inexperienced customer insist on a certain ad copy or ad program that they "know will work" only to see no responses.
Often, advertisers who do not know a lot about a new medium will fly blind assuming that print works like online ads. It simply isn't true. I would highly advise anyone that is trying print for the first time to not be afraid to reach out to someone who knows the business so they can get it right the first time. These days, money is tight and we want to get the most for it. Don't be afraid to call someone who can give you good professional advice.
Print can be a very effective media for promoting business opportunities unless it's not done correctly. Then it can be a money pit just like anything else!
