I've just started thinking today about starting a DVD rental back at my original hometown.

The population is about 700 and there is only 1 person that is doing it. (closest Block buster is like 800 miles away). Personally, I know there are a lot of renters there and I am a customer myself as well.

I have thought so much great ideas how to compete him and structured the plans already. By using my copywriting, ad, USP, bonuses, and online marketing skills, I think I could compete him easily on offline.

But I don't want to assume I can just beat him overnight. I mean, he's been doing this since 80ies. He has the best credibility in town.

My dad used to rent VHS tapes too and compete well with him when I was just a little boy watching cartoons all the time. Now that I'm grown up, I'd like to do this too.

But I have no idea where to get resources, I know I could just talk to my dad out of it, but I need some help from this forum as well. I know a lot of you are great mentors.

So I need some advices. A lot of them. lol

hmmm - that is a little out of my realm. . You won't want to ask your competitor how to do it but you might want to contact someone in another town and ask for resources...?

I have a question that seem to be obvious, at least to me.

Is there a sufficiently big market for two video rental places when the population is only 700? How many rentals could there be among 700 people per week?

Sit around the store on a Friday or Saturday night and count the number of people taking out videos. Do that also on a weekday night and see the difference. Is the market big enough for two video stores?

I don't think it would provide a living for both of you. And, what "bad blood" would there be in a small community with competitive video rental stores?

Is it really worth it?

And the Netflix or other affiliate program only provides a one-time commission. Not a long term income. And that's only for people who can plan their video watching, not spur-of-the-moment renters.

I think you need to find another product market. But, let us know the amount of traffic you find.

l think like you said you may want to provide what he is not giving the population, you may want to include something beside the dvds ,or you can look at the no of youth in your area and go with video games. if you can a fford it let them come and play at your joint / store that you have started
good luck
