Can You Stomach Another Social Networking Site?

Saw an article before regarding Google's newest brainchild: GoogleBuzz.

Supposed to be their foray into Social Networking. Aimed at connecting their Gmail market and fusing a search function with the standard social networking platform.

So with Twitter tweeting away its own popularity in a sea of biz opps and FB still tromping Myspace, the question is:

Do we really need another social network? And are you going to check it out?

I have to admit I was, like, "whatever", when I first heard about it , but then we ARE entrepreneurs, aren't we? lol

And that means if there is something new out there, we DO have to check it out, right? We can't stand NOT to.

Interesting question, and I look at it from two perspectives...

1. the point of view of the marketer
2. the point of view of the market

... and the answer might be the same for both.

As marketers we are taught that to maximize success we should first find out what the market is asking for and then deliver that to them.

So, assuming that Google did their due diligence, tested the market and found that there was strong demand for another social network, they would simply be giving the public what it wants.

The market is saying, "We want another social network," and Google is responding, "OK, standby, we'll have one ready for you in a moment!"

Now, if you are a serious marketer who uses social networks to promote your business, you know you'll have to deal with the noise and clutter of casual chatter that consumes the greater portion of these networks.

But you'll simply use creative, persuasive, aggressive, subtle, and any other legitimate and acceptable marketing tactics to have your message seen and heard above the crowd.

And you could look at that in two ways too:

You could shrug your shoulders and think, "Here we go again. Who needs another one of these!" Or, you could rub your hands together in delight and say: "Wow! Another opportunity to reach more prospects."

That brings me to the second question:

Yes. I'll be looking to see how it may be similar to, or different from some of the other popular networks, and figure out how I could utilize it to advance my own agenda.

To do otherwise would be to potentially "leave money on the table," (I so dislike that expression!) and that is such a marketing no-no.

Facebook is a zoo.

I have like minded friends and am still blasted with messages, vuirtual gifts, offers to join clubs..it is becoming annoying.

This is my only issue. Judging from Twitter's sudden rise then drop off in popularity, and a comparative 18 million members to FB 250 million, I'm just not sure people are looking for a new network in a social sense. In a business sense, I tend to think most marketers follow what's popular socially.

My sentiments were more in line with yours MMom. I'm going to take a look because due diligence always gets done what needs to be.

I just dread yet another Account Login/sign up page/friend addition process. Lol. I think every day for at least the last 7 months I've become a "member" "acct. holder" or had to just plain ole' register for at least one thing. Maybe I'm becoming a research junkie.

On a social network site, the good thing is you do have the opportunity to build your presence, and that can build trust. Depending on your niche, it is very advantageous.

That being said, yes I will check it out, what's one more addiction?

You don't have to choose every single social network in the galaxy. Pick the one you like the best and stick with it.

I like Twitter more than I like Facebook. I enjoy sharing useful info with other people, but you also have to converse with them. Through Twitter I was able to find an advertising partner which was pretty useful. Plus, you can start following friends who are like-minded, and they're likely to follow back. The key is to talk to them.

A big list of friends seems ideal, but it's not required. It's better to have a small list of responsive followers, like with email, than to have a big list where no one pays attention.

I don't suspect Twitter will disappear anytime soon, especially since its real time capability has helped people during the Chile earthquake, etc.

Each social network has its quirks and culture, just see which one you like best and work at it.

I was one of those who resisted the internet for quite some time.

How can one really enjoy and get to know virtual friends?

Victoria was wrong!
I have been introduced to incredible opportunities, and have some dear like-minded friends.

It is a blessing to have found each other and have the ability to work together and communicate, free.

This forum with all of the various talented members is the perfect gathering place.

So, although Facebook and the gifts and messages are becoming overwhelming, I appreciate the social side of the web.

Sometimes you can build synergies between social networks, i. e. tweeting your face book fan page or posting your Digg bookmarks page link on twitter, endless ideas and opportunities there. Google Buzz will be another platform that people will use to drive traffic.

I was introduced to something called m#%^&*. It's supposed to put all of the social networking sites into a hub where you can use a centralized platform. They are in stages and i barely just started to look into it. PM me if you'd like a link to it.

I agree with Cliffs- the more the merrier. The advantage to having so many social networking sites is that we have more opportunities to get our businesses in front of millions. Just because I love Twitter doesn't mean that I'm able to market to my entire target audience. It's wise to keep our options open and utilize as many tools and resources that are available to us.

I have NOT tried Google Buzz yet, and do not know if I will, who knows, maybe at some point I may find the need to. I do know of some people who have used it and claim that it still has some NEWBIE bugs and is still going through the process of perfecting it. I think as marketers we have to take every chance we get and use it to our advantage. Yet, I have my own set of rules for using social networks. KNOW the reason we are there for, BUSINESS. Make sure everyone we accept as friends or followers have the same interests as you, especially since most people are on social networks for one thing only, Socializing. By being strict with yourself, setting boundaries and goals, your time using a social network will be worthwhile.
