I recently began blog commenting for SEO. How exactly is it good for SEO, give me your opinion.

Well, I am assuming that you mean that you actually go to people's blogs, post a comment there with your website link.

Hope I am right.

Well, this is a very good strategy in my view to get free backlinks. I have done it with my sites too so it works.

Just make sure that you don't SPAM these blogs because I know that many of them will moderate all of the comments that come in so if they see that you SPAM them, they will not approve it.

Usually when people spam a blog, they will do it this way.

They will post something like:

I agree. Very interesting.

This is useless and is considered spam.

If you can submit a good comment just like I have done in this thread, you will get approved and people may trust you more to click on your link.

If you're submitting blog comments to a Wordpress blog, Wordpress automatically has the no-follow tag in the comment section unless that site has placed a do-follow plug-in in the comment section.

If the comment section is no-follow, regardless of what PR rank the site has, then you will not get link juice from that site to help your own site rank. Period.

So how do you find out which site is no-follow and which is do-follow?

Here's a free trick. Go to Firefox Plugins/Add-ons and type in the search box "nodofollow". This is a plugin by Zachary Fox. Download and install it.

When it's time to use the plugin, right click and check it. When you want to turn it off, right click and un-check it.

This is what you're looking for: if the color highlighted is pink, that means the link is no-follow. If it's highlighted purple, it's do follow.

Very handy free tool to have on your computer. You don't want to go around sites blog commenting only to find out that half of them aren't even sending you link juice.

For understandable reasons, bloggers leave the no-follow tag up to thwart off spammers. So be sure when commenting, you are contributing to the conversation, and not doing "hit-n-run" commenting.

There's another plug-in made for Wordpress blogs that can really, really help you out called Comment Luv. However, it only works on blogs that also have the Comment Luv plugin enabled.

Comment Luv plug-in allows the last link to your blog to show up in the comment, and there will be a little heart next to it, which is the logo for Comment Luv. So after you leave a comment, people will notice your last blog post link entitled "Ten ways to rank well with SEO", for example.

But...

If you register your site for free with ComLuvNetwork.com, you can actually choose from which of the last 5 blogposts you wrote that you prefer to expose while blog commenting.

Believe me, Comment Luv works. I've gotten responses to my blog posts much faster that way than through forum marketing or anything else.

If you have a Blogspot blog, don't worry. You can register it with ComLuvNetwork which will import your Blogspot blog posts into a Wordpress platform. Then you can install the Comment Luv Plugin.

When you go around commenting on blogs, your Comment Luv link will show up. But when people click on your link, they will be sent to your original Blogspot blog.

So it's a neat, free way of blogging and getting backlinks without having to spend money on web hosting or a domain name. I'm still a believer you should always have your own self-hosted blog because Google had knocked down so many Blogspot blogs, thinking they were spamming. And they never give a warning.

But Comment Luv is a great way to get a head start if you've got a low budget to start with.

NoFollow Or DoFollow, backlink is a backlink. If you are not building link wheels, it makes no different if your backlink is NoFollow.

Commenting on .gov and .edu blogs are WAY, WAY more effective, than simple blogs.

Anyplace you can comment that has high quality traffic that you are looking for will help in your website promotions.

Here's a secret to getting others that read the comments to click on your site:

Don't just make the link to your site your name. Come up with something very short and catchy that will intrigue the other site visitors and make them click.

You will see most blog commenting marketers just putting in their name or nick-name that links to their site, that's novice blog commenting. You don't want to just get the back links you want to get some of the traffic coming to that hot blog site.

I love Comment Luv as well! I try to provide useful comments on other blogs to build page rank when I have time, but be sure to choose blogs that are relevant to your site. For example, if you're in the health-related industry it won't do you much good if you comment on a blog about gaming or home decorating.

Blog commenting, forum posting and writing articles are three exceptional ways to build your page rank and attract targeted traffic

Hey tess, it is great that you are using blog commenting and posting to help you increase traffic. HOWEVER, I think you are a bit confused, leaving a link at a blog will help increase traffic and with
SEO purposes, but not with PR. Page Rank is just a "decorative" rank or "title" that Google gives sites in order to classify them. It is something that happens every three months and does NOT guarantee traffic or even placement in SERPS. In addition, no one knows for sure what factors Google takes into consideration when determining what PR to give any particular site or blog.

Now, going back to blogging, most people underestimate the value and the power a link at a blog can have. If you provide insightful and valuable information in your posts or your comments, it will not only help search engines find you but will also develop your reputation among other marketers. If you are participating in a blog JUST for the link, you are going about it the wrong way. You must participate, collaborate and provide useful information that will make the readers WANT to use your services.

Hi guys,

This is a great thread. I have beeb doing some blog commenting but not as much as I should, and will pick it up more now.

Just a quick question though - where do you all find the blogs to comment on in your niche? Do you just google "your nice" + blogs or do a blog search on word press? I like the idea of geting a back link from a .edu and .gov site but wouln't know where o start looking for that kind of blog.

Any ideas?

Cheers

Dan

you can find some blogs to comment in some social networking sites, or even in facebook, joined group page and participate and be active.

You can use google custom search - do follow custom blogs, it is a useful way to find dofollow blogs.
If you are searching for CommentLuv Blogs use this code:
"title="CommentLuv Enabled""YOUR KEYPHRASE"

Make sure you replace "Your keyphrase" with your keyword

You can also create group pages of your own and if you are creative and have a good topic, you will create a following on Facebook. You also have to build a reputation there and that starts on your wall. This takes time that some may feel is better invested elsewhere.

I have done this, my following is not huge by any means, 150 or so, and that did not happen overnight. Thing is the 150 are a very targeted audience. It's still growing though. I can see a decline in my business when I am quiet on Facebook. I may write an article that links to my blog and post the article in the group and it gets clicked on. Many ways to use Facebook to create backlinks in my opinion. Direct and Indirect links.

I don't spam either, not in the least.

Long term satisfaction over instant gratification.

I also do blog commenting and it works well in getting back links. I also find that a lot of times that blog owner will inturn visit my blog as well.

I find blogs to comment on by doing a search on Blog Catalog or by browsing through their directory.

Yeah, I agree with everyone here, it's great for creating backlinks, meaning google will "respect" the website where you are linking to more, so you will be further up in the search pages. Linking to websites when commenting on blogs is also a way to get your blogs indexed and will also give you another source of traffic to your site.
Hope this helped

In short, blog commenting it part of the overall SEO package, your competitors are doing, so you'll need to do it also to stay on top, it's also something you could outsource, but if you do outsource, make sure you find somebody reliable.

To stay on top, you have to work on SEO because SEO can help you generate more backlinks for your website. You have to struggle to get your keywords to be on top.

Good SEO = higher exposure = more visitors and sales.

Blog commenting is definitely effective to some degree, although I never had much success with it. However, if you're going to do it, you should do blogs that have the plug-ins KeywordLuv, CommentLuv, and of course are dofollow.

And the most important thing is to leave valuable comments!

I agree big time! Blog commenting is very effective as long as you do not abuse it! Well worth your time and great for not only SEO but traffic as well.. Never place a link in the comment box only use the link where it is indicated. Also read the article and comment about it or even better join in on a conversation that is already on a blog.. Blog owners love that! Trust me I am one of them
