I am a man in my 50's, my company is eding closer and closer to layoffs, and I am looking for a solid, legitimate home business with which to replace my income, at least. In the past I have tried Liberty League, Xango, Agel and a few others and found them to be a money and/or time drain. Like many others in this economic downturn, I don't have much to invest and , in any case, would not be likely to do so without seeing promising results. I need to earn around $5,000 monthly. Any suggestions you may have will be appreciated.

GBG is a great free MLM company.
The "forced matrix"(that promotes spillover), free opportunity, and great truly discounted product, make this in my mind the best company in the industry.
It is a team business, considering everyone builds the same matrix.
You will see promising results if you treat it like a business ^^.
Best of Luck,

jonesy: In the past I have tried Liberty League, Xango, Agel and a few others and found them to be a money and/or time drain. Hi Jonesy, I can feel where you are coming from. I have been there. Many of us here have.
I suggest you commit yourself first to learning and doing research, before you go any further.
As far as I can see, $5000/mo. is an unrealistic goal for a beginner in online marketing. Oh yes, there are plenty of online 'business offers' that will tell you just what you are hoping to hear, that you can make this kind of money within a few weeks.
That just AIN'T GONNA HAPPEN!!
Not legally.
You didn't have to join any of those plans to find out what a money pit they are. It's all right here: http://www.mlm-thetruth.com/EvalsS-Z.htm
They have thoroughly analyzed more MLM's than you or I can even count (MLM's come and go quite rapidly).
Just pick an MLM and see what's up with it. They are all alphabetized.
Take your time and do research. Do NOT believe ANY hype.
Get whatever kind of labor/job/dependable income you can for the short term until you really know 'wassup' with online marketing. Then after THOROUGH research, you can make a cautious move or two, and start your practical learning process from there.
Otherwise, get ready to be scammed out of lots of money.
Online marketers (especially MLM'ers) prey on people in your situation, hoping they will leap before they look.
ENCOURAGING them to do so!

May I suggest that MLM or Network Marketing is not for you! Any business reuires you invest time or money or both.
You have already tried a couple of different busines's by the look of it...adding one more business to the list probably isnt the answer you are looking for.
I would suggest you learn HOW to "online market" before you undertake any further business ventures.

jonesy: In the past I have tried Liberty League, Xango, Agel and a few others and found them to be a money and/or time drain I think the key is that you don't "try" your business. It is a business.. It's not something you should be "trying".
You have to want it... It's not a time drain.. It's a business.
Shaun might be right if you do not wish to change your viewpoints.
Matt

Yeah...that "Time Drain" comment really stood out as a warning bell for me. That is why I suggest MLM Network Marketing may not be for you Jonesy.
Furthermore...there is no try. There is only do or do not. Can or cannot. Will or will not !

You got some great advice here! I agree that network marketing may not be your cup of tea. The only time I even came close to making $5000 with network marketing was with Coastal and it cost me $11000 to get into it.
I decided that mlm or network marketing is just not my thing but then Matt seems to be doing well so it just depends on what floats your boat!

Ron,
In my own experience online, in order to succeed in a network marketing opportunity you will need to pay some sort of a monthly fee in order to get commissions.
Plus, you will also need to advertise online for a fee. Sure there are free ways to generate free traffic but paying for traffic has much quicker results.
If you are thinking about joining a HIGH ticket work at home program then I personally do not recommend it myself.
If you do find a good and solid network marketing company, please don't think that you can make $5000 per month within a year's time.
It takes time to find leaders in your team. Give it at least 2-5 years and you will do well as long as you persist, take action, and never give up.
Take care,
Tal

Thanks to all for the incisive responses. The "time drain" comment was probably a Freudian slip but telling as I do not like selling and, thus, am not good doing so. TJam the website you listed has been very informative, thanks. So is there no such thing as a passive income that can last? It seems the life of most of these systems is about two years.

The key to success in any business is successful marketing. It boils down to three key factors:
Traffic - To get new prospects to view your offer
Leads - Capturing the leads into your system to continue marketing to them (80% of all sales occur between the 5th and the 12th contact.)
Sales - Making the sale, delivering the product and cashing your checks (or however you get your money)
Once you understand this, finding ways to get more traffic, get more leads and make more sales, it is just a learning exercise to keep increasing your numbers.

You can make more than $5000 a month if you wish, but don't expect that kind of income to come for at least 6 months.
You can make money online in any profitable niche with a quality product as long as you have proper training.
The thing that trips people up in the internet business more than anything else is where they're getting their training from.
A lot of times beginners are learning it from ebooks that are designed to teach just one strategy. This is great for more advanced members who want to specialize in a technique, but if you don't have a solid foundation in the basic skills it takes to market on the internet, it will be a long battle. I can speak from experience: 2 years, 7 coaching courses, 100+ ebooks and $20K wasted dollars later.
Some programs will resonate better with your learning style then others. If it works for you, stick to it. If not, find a better teacher, a positive and professional teacher. I've tried coaching programs with some negative, haughty people. Stay away from those! No point in being rich and nasty, too.
Research well what you think you're interested in. If you like eBay better, do eBay. It's easier. If you like the idea of an online business with no inventory, no customer service, no webstore to deal with then affiliate marketing or a multi-level marketing (MLM) is probably up your alley.

Hi Jonesy,
I, too, would agree that perhaps you should consider something other than MLM as your safety net.
You are wise to be looking into solutions now before your job is gone. Making $5000 per month online or from home is possible, but it definitely takes time to get to that point. If you can begin building your foundation now, you'll be well on your way should what you suspect happens with your current job.
I completely understand what you mean by a money/time drain. Obviously, you are going to have to invest some money and some time to build a business. The question is how much and what kind of ongoing requirements will there be.
If you have the patience and determination to take the "way of the tortoise," I would suggest you consider building an online business by building a niche website about a subject of great interest to you.
That's what I learned to do beginning three years ago. Over the last 9 months, I have been unable to spend much time at all working on my sites because of my mother's failing health. In spite of that, my income doubled during that time because my foundation was already laid and my sites could virtually run on auto-pilot. Of course, I attribute some of it to the blessings of the Lord, too.
I hope you DO consider looking into SBI or find something else that meets your needs.
Blessings, Angie

jonesy Getting into a work at home job not having to worry about layoffs, or the recession would be worth looking at. Make sure it is something that you may be interested in. Also make sure the company is solid, and has great training and support to offer, this will help you launch your business right away.

"Auto-Pilate" sales is the key...
Finding a niche or category of great interest to you is great advice, (happywife!)
Establishing online presence that will continue to advertise itself constantly... i.e. backlinks, incoming links, search engine optimization, good content, hand submitting your site to search engines, pay per click advertising, and of course... products that over deliver the promise.
I believe that having your own domain name is one of the major keys to success. Because you can revise, edit, and test it.
With MLM's ... you're trying to recruit, and most often you have no control of your sites content.

1life1fire: With MLM's ... you're trying to recruit, and most often you have no control of your sites content. That is an oxymoron...
If you have no control of your sites content you need a new web host...
And if you mean THE COMPANY'S site.. Then you should specify that .
Matt
PS. You are not trying to recruit you are trying to promote your product and help others succeed with their goals and dreams.

jonesy: TJam the website you listed has been very informative, thanks. So is there no such thing as a passive income that can last? It seems the life of most of these systems is about two years. That researcher seems to not like ANY MLM's!
But I know that some, GDI for example, have lasted quite a while.
Do a LOT of searching and REsearching I say. Make SURE it's something you FEEL, like the others say.
Affiliate marketing can't be beat.
But you'll need a source of income for right now, while you build a long term biz/residual income.
Best source is a J-O-B!
But take a look at what folx have in their signature and RESEARCH anything you find interesting...
good luck!
