Wow reading your post was very scary for a relatively new work from home initiate (under 6 months) I haven't made anything as yet I hope it doesn't take 10 years.
I only tried affiliate marketing for a short time and lost interest rapidly as the places I joined never seemed to cater for my interests. So I made my own site with a little help it may not be a niche market but its something I enjoy and that seems to be the difference for me.
I hope to make a living off of it (seeing as I cant work) but I if I don't who cares as long as i'm having fun right?
So my suggestion is try to get what you are passionate about online it will be the best thing you have ever done and others may have the same passion and the money will slowly roll in .
Good Luck.

You made $286, you did something right. Why don't you repeat that.

You've been doing this 10 years? I'm only into year 2, but things are looking up. What happened I got mad. A gentleman offered to review the things I was doing and help me out. He'd offered his help to a limited number of people on twitter. He started out great, offering to set up a wordpress blog, where to sign up to get our blogs noticed. Sounds great, right? What I started to notice was everything, well most of it, had an affiliate link attached to it, which I didn't mind, show me what to do and still earn was okay by me. I finally had someone who knew what they were doing. Thing was I had limited money, well no money actually at the time, so I couldn't afford to pay for some of the stuff. I told him so, which he said was no problem, he was there to help. Well, long story short, he stopped answering my emails, right while I was in the middle of a couple big projects and I hadn't a clue what to do, spent money I couldn't afford on a domain name, web hosting, and a few other things figuring now I had someone to help explain. No answer to emails, left my website hanging, never finished it.

So I got mad and started looking for sites that would help me learn what to do. I found them. Now I'm learning on my own, and things are starting to look up.

Hi Jeff

Wow 10 years huh? Now that is persistence for ya!

I am going to play devils advocate here a bit - no offense meant ... just throwing a thought into the mix.

It reminds me of a guy I knew (bit off the track but the message is clear). He battled to attract women ... He tried short hair - didn't work, he tried growing his hair long - didn't work, he tried growing a beard - didn't work, he tried just a mustache - didn't work, he was skinny and as he thought that was the problem - he went to gym and developed abs to die for - still didn't work, every month he tried a different aftershave, deoderant - didn't work. He tried dressing smart - didn't work - dressed casual and hip - didn't work .........you got to admit this guy tried just about everything!!!

By now he was well into his 30's and had not had a serious girlfriend and was convinced he would remain single for the rest of his life. He stopped trying - wore his hair in a style that he felt comfy with, dressed in a way he felt comfy with, used a deoderant and aftershave he liked ... he became comfortable with himself and he learnt to enjoy who he was.

Yep you guessed it ... at 36 he met a women, they dated for 3 years and finally married.

Why? I think you know the answer.

Think about what you having been doing the last 10 years. Re-think what you should have been doing the last 10 years.

jeffp87:
same re-hashed redundant stuff you hear all over the internet, such as find a niche, do keyword research, build a site or blog full of quality content, submit articles or use PPC or SEO to drive traffic.

Maybe this stuff has been re-hashed because .... in principle ... it works.

Maybe you were doing something you were not passionate about ... unless you are passionate, how can you be positive, and if you are not positive .... are you not just attracting negativity ( I am a huge believer in ... if you can dream it you can live it because thoughts become things - laws of attraction and all that jazz)

You say you needed step by step instructions .... well i thought I would only be able to do it if I got that kind of help. Instead I did the next best thing ... i read threads in forums, devoured websites like bummarketing, subscribed to free e-books and made notes along the way. Slowly I developed my own step by step instruction manual .... tried out different methods to see which worked for me - trashed those that didn't. And guess what, I am still learning - every day I pick up something new.

I don't have just one mentor ... i have quite a few ... its all these generous people in forums who have helped me every step of they way (OK belonging to Wealthy Affiliate University also helped).

My point ... don't give up pal - change your tactics!

enough rambling from me
