I just wanted to pass this along for what it's worth. For everybody that is just starting out in your home based business...this is YOUR business. 1.Be ready to work longer hours in the beginning especially if you are wise and using free techniques to advertise.
2. Do not ever give up. Way too many people pack it all in right before they are about to make profit. I have seen it happen over and over.
3. Use your time wisely. Just like a regular 9-5 job, you must dedicate time to working your business.
4. Set realistic goals. Set short term and long term goals for your business. Evaluate where you fell short and fix it.
5. Have fun. This is your business and your future. Enjoy what you are doing. Think about it. Many people go through life without going after their dreams. You are going after yours.
It does not matter if you are running an affiliate program, a blog, a shopping website or even a brick and mortar business of your own. You are doing what 95% of the population are not. Working for yourself and securing your financial future by your own rules.

Good points here. I think you hit the nail right on the head. It is so important to not only be persistent and patient, but also to create the business to fit you needs, abilities, and interests. As you said, you gotta make it your own. Nice post

True stuff. Like it or not, making money is a business. Too many treat it as a hobby/pass time/nebulous idea/etc. Treat it like a business and you'll be happy you did.

Great post. One must treat their online biz as a real business. Treat it like a hobby and you will NOT get the results you are looking for.
Regardless of what your online business consists of - it is ultimately up to you to succeed.
And sometimes you have to spend money to make money - though one can also make money without spending much more than their time. Free methods may take longer to achieve the desired results - but it can be done.

Hi kencraw,
Good points.
In response to number:
1. Yes, it's important to give it top priority.
I spend over 60 hours a week on my sites and have been doing so for years. Task variety and balancing work with errands, chores, exercise, hobbies, and breaks keeps the interest and energy at peak level.
2. Passionate commitment is what it takes. Making mistakes is a valuable learning experience. The only time you'll fail is when you quit.
3. Keep up with the industry via continuous education but don't be stuck in study mode forever. Take action on the learning. See to your progress.
4. Learn, plan, monitor, tweak. Repeat. You may find that you don't really need specific goals. Keep a well-oiled machine and it'll take care of itself. Consistently do what makes sense and perfect every aspect. It'll take care of itself and "goals" will happen naturally.
5. Make sure it's enjoyable. Enjoy the process and don't be too attached to the results. Don't do it for the money per se.
Else it'll be like a forced march.
I hope you're in it because you enjoy it and because it's the best choice available to you or you'll be miserable.
Online marketing is one of my favorite hobbies. I can't imagine forcing myself to do something just because of the income potential. A forced march can only last so long.

Hard? Not having somebody else to encourage? Let me first preface what I am about to say with this...Do not take this as me being mean, harsh or uncaring. That is not my intent. With that said......
Newbie or not...If this is what you want to go after..then do it. Just like with every other passionate thing in your life you must go after it despite the odds and despite the encouragement you may or may not recieve. You are talking about YOUR life, YOUR livelihood, and YOUR financial freedom. If someone needs a voive behind them constantly to drive them , then they probably should not be attempting to start thier OWN business. Part of running your own business, website, blog, brick and mortar shop is driving yourself to do what you do. Period
If you have the desire in your soul to start your own home based business you must be able to encourage yourself despite the odds and others attitude towards it. Gain your encouragement through learning and growing your business and of course getting feedback from others through forums like this.

I appreciate reading what kencraw had to say. His 5 bullet points on running a home-based business are right on the money. I'm just starting out on a part-time basis and I have not made any income yet. However, I know that situation will change for the better and money will be made with work, effort, patience, and most of all, persistence. I look forward to this challenge because I will not be satisfied until I'm working at home full-time, making $4000-$5000 a month (which is good money for a single person like myself) and firing my boss once and for all. After that, I can build it from there and go further. I know it will take me months do this right and kencraw's points provide me the insight and inspiration I need as a beginner in the affiliate marketing trade. I look forward to getting to know more members in this forum and the other forums at this website. Thanks.
