It's not always a scam if you are asked to put up some cash upfront. However, any "business" that requires you to do so must legally be providing you with some sort of product or service, even if it's an MLM/affiliate type deal.
I read somewhere that many of those email spammers actually make money, but I'm not sure how that would've been found out, or if there's much truth to it.

The scammers are slowley getting pushed out now as people are becoming wiser when purchasing so-called work from home training.
People are searching google for info on possible training and can make an informed decision on what they find. In reality, anyone offering to show you a business that can generate thousands with little or no work is basically not telling the full truth.
1, Not everybody is suited to being able to be their own boss, most people are too conditioned by the system and are trapped into their lifestyle by Mortgages, bills, ect'
2, If you are tempted by adverts that tell you that someone is going to show you a magic formula for $47.00 then you might not have the common sense to run your own business.
3, If you are seduced into thinking that some big internet marketer will hold your hand and tell you his inner secrets, then yo'll be very dissapointed.
The bottom line is, Yes, it is possible to work from home and there are many different business models but if you are looking for people who promise instant wealth or promise to show you fool proof ways to earn cash, you'll be sadly dissapointed.

As the old adage states "If it sounds to good to be true, it probably is". If everyone would stop and think, especially in this economy, if it were so great then why isn't all over the news.
I got drawn it at first and lost money. It took me awhile to find a good company to align with. I work at home, keyword being work. I do my marketing, phone calls and emails 7 days a week. I'm building a good residual income now.
Do yourself a favor, do your homework first. read these forums. There are some good posts by some great people here.

I'm a sucker apparently, I've been scammed more than I care to admit. in fact, I've spent more on scams then I have made from Internet marketing. Sad story.

I do think that people don't realise that this is a real business and understand it requires work and a certain mindset.
Most people are too conditioned to motivate themselves and don't have the desire to leave their comfort zone.
That's why people fall for the over inflated claims of easy wealth because they are lazy and want an easy answer. Most never find it and call all the systems scams. You will find that most of the create wealth systems are just basic supply and demand tactics wrapped in a fancy display package.
Most would work but it does take an investment in time, money or both. In the same breath, those marketers that promise instant weallth are not telling the full story so, yes, this is being deceptive.

knilesh We need to distinguish Job and Business. With any business there are expenses. I think the difference is in the risk. How much do you have to risk before you see a profit? My husband and I after trying different businesses, decided on one. Here are the things we considered: 1. Company Track Record. Most companies fail within the first 5 years or do not record any consistent growth. 2. Financially sound: Will it last? is it debt free? How good are they with sending out profit checks? 3. Strong Management: Do the owners own the downline or are they corporate leaders coming from real Fortune 500 companies? 4. Unique Consumable Products: Do I have to reinvent the wheel and create a "Need" market or is there an everyday need for the products? What about the quality? can they really compete against the competition? 5. Competitively Priced: Are they using smart economics, great value and do they have control of their products or are they just distributors? 6. High Reorder Rate: Can they show their Business Reports to validate their retention rate? 7. Do I have to adjust my whole budget for this business and make a huge investment on inventory or is it accessible to everyone? 8. Timing: Is the compensation coming from just upfront fees or is there really residual income? 9. Organizational Policies: Can it be taken from me? Is the company rewarding the non-producers? 10. What is their guarantee? Can I get a refund? What is their cancellation policy? These are just some of the questions we took into account before deciding. Is part of being an intelligent shopper, whether shopping at the stores or shopping online. Weigh everything out and do not hesitate to ask questions.

Travis Korns You should do careful due diligence on the business you are thinking of being invovled with. Have a checklist that you can refer to that may help red flag any possible scams straight away.

Well! I am new to this forum so first off let me just say, hi all!! But on a more serious note, I'd say that the most prominent way to decipher a malicious scam from what is legitimate, is BACKGROUND info. Sure you can search the web for information on certain products, programs, etc that may or may not be worth your time, but I'd say that the best way to discover what's truly genuine is by doing what we do right here...posting Scoping out the chatter over various forums, chat rooms, and the like, in my opinion, is the best way to find out whether a product or service is true blue. Even researching on the internet has become flawed, because now scammers have gotten smart and acquired a new system that has made it even more difficult to spot them. They set their own reviews now, and I've seen them even go as far as buying domains and keywords using the names of their products and ending it with the word "scam" which appeals to anyone worth their salt and smart enough to research before buying. So, I guess in my opinion the only true way to find out about a certain product being legitimate is to ask around as much as possible before pursuing it. It's a shame that something as simple as researching a scam has even turned into a scam now. So be careful guys! Someone out there has been bound to fall for it at least once..that's about the only thing you can count on.

I am glad that someone has mentioned a few times that there is a big difference between a home business and a home-based job. That needs to always remain clear because there will always be fees for setting up a home business. Sometimes, there are even fees for working at home with a bona fide job.
I read about a company called Arise...and they set people up to do customer service and sales and maybe even some technical work from home. But you have to be incorporated, and you are 1099 with them...and you have to take a test just to work for their clients. A friend of mine spent nearly 300 just to get setup.
Personally, I think a home business is a safer bet - as long as you have solid processes and systems in place.
Great thread.

From my experience the best way to identify work at home scams is if they ask for money up front to pay them and if there are not members who are readily willing to provide proof of payment to you

Dave Earley Just look at it this way. Even if they ask for only a dollar from each person - at the end of the day it all adds up. And most people will not think twice before committing a dollar to something they think will make them money. The only difference is that the person who is putting in the dollar will get nothing - but, the person to whom it is being sent will multiply the dollar by as many people as those who put the dollar in. 500 people in one day means $500 for nothing - but scamming people out of their hard earned money.(

If you are applying for a JOB that asks you for money upfront, then that is a scam.

I joined PayperMails a few months back. They claim to pay you $100 per email you read. As a free member, you can't withdraw funds until you reach $25,000. I reached that amount like 3 times already. I request the money and I get a lame response from them saying they will pay me in at least 90 days . . .if my account is in good standing. -Or something along those lines.
Imagine if this wasn't a scam. . . LOL

Martin Butler is SPOT on. Working at home is definitely Not for everyone. You have to be motivated, passionate, work hard, persist, get up after failing and try again. It's hard work, but if you stick it out and go the long haul it can be Very rewarding!
To avoid scams, start your own online business and use the marketing tips and such to assist you in your attempt at success.

photomom04 I was just going to say that, if I have logged into a site with the promise of a free join up and then at the fag end of it all get told I need to pay just $........ with a money back guarantee if not satisfied, I immediately pull away. Because to me that in itself is a broken promise and not a good omen.
Also, if they are making so much money and its so easy to do - then why don't they let you join for free as SFI does. The moment they ask for even a dollar I go ............... next.

Vishal P. Rao: Note: If you feel suspicious about an opportunity, do a search on Google.com with keywords: COMPANY NAME Scam. You'll most likely come across discussions pertaining to the opportunity, if it's a scam. Be careful when you are looking for scams this way. It is now popular to create a blog with keywords like __________ scam in order to trick people who are looking up weather or not the product or system is a scam. If you stick to forums you are much more safe because you are usually getting the opinion of many. Blogs can be made to be very misleading with fake comments.
I agree with Nessloch on the sites he suggests above.

Oh i dont really think thats true. Inrunning a business there is always overhead. A better way to spot a scam is look at their credentials. for instance do they have a relationship with a major retailer like Walmart? Have they been reviewed by major media? Do they have know experts talking about them? When you type their name nto Google is there a significant amount of content

I also like to use a google search to find out whether a company is a reputable business or not. One thing I have noticed though is that you have to be a little bit careful, because even a good business will have people out there that just did not succeed with a company, because they lacked putting in the correct effort to make it work for themselves.
Normally I will search "reviews for xxxxxxxxx business". This usually gives me good results.
