Not the Federal government per se, but many local, state, and non-profits do.
Federal grants tend to go towards research instead of development.
Check on your city and state's websites for links to available grants.
Most require a lot of paperwork and spending reports, a lot of work.
The Small Business Development Corps at local colleges can help.
Small grants for artist are given out frequently and are easier.
But no, grants should not be taken for granted. It's hard.
Don't believe someone who promises a grant for a fee.
If they want a fee let them deduct it from the award.
Never pay up front for a promise too good to be true.

I would go to your local chamber of commerce - they should be able to hook you up with the right person that can give you a hand or at least help you get started. There is a local gal in my VERY small town of about 1500 people that got a small business grant - the key to getting one is to stay persistent and on top of things till you get through all the red tape. Good luck!

David,

I think you should call or contact your local chamber of commerce and see what they say. You can also go to your accountant to see what he or she recommends. They know a whole lot about this.
