Both are good and both are good for the "long run".
The bit that actually matters is the quality - and sometimes the relevance - of the directory.

Articles are much better. Directories are old-school; they are not very useful anymore and are definitely stuck in SEO 1.0. Although they still can help however, you will get much more out of writing quality articles and linking to your site.

Backlinking is one of the key aspects towards ranking well in the search engines and both article and directory submissions can have a positive effect.

Article links are only as good as the article.
If you develop great writing skills articles can be super effective for links and also clickthroughs from very targeted visitors.
Directory links are becoming less valuable these days but if you submit to high pagerank sites it is worth your time particularly if you submit consistently a bit at a time and continue to grow your directory links over time.
I use a semi-automatic free submission service which lets me choose the sites but I don't have to re-write my title, description, tags etc each time.
I can submit to a dozen or so a day in about 5 minutes. I simply use the pagerank adjustment feature and start with the highest pagerank sites and submit to them exclusively.
It's worked out pretty good for several of my sites with very little effort.

The Shield's response is pinpoint accurate.
When it comes to effective online marketing, it helps to think in terms of inclusion rather than exclusion. In other words, to maximize your promotional efforts you should think "and" instead of "or" because no single tool covers all the bases.
While search directories and article distribution sites play different roles, they certainly compliment each other. So, to rely on one over the other is like trying to clap with one hand.
Quality AND relevance are critical components when deciding where to obtain permanent links. You can count on each of those elements to deliver a sufficient supply of targeted traffic that will enhance the value of the links.

I have to agree with Hermas.
It's not about OR, it's about AND.
It's a "shot-gun" approach. ( I'm not a native speaker and I'm not sure if "shot-gun approach" has any other meaning than just "wide net" ), but I say - massive action will produce massive results and it doesn't matter pushing which button contributed to what portion of success. They all have to be pushed.

It depends on how long the article lasts. But I feel that Directory Submisions form the longest lasting Backlinks although they can tale a while for some of the to catch up with your site. some take up to 30 days to approve your site.
You really nee to do BOTH..
Just one mans opinion...

Articles are better but both are important. Make sure your articles are unique & you may get your article syndicated giving you many more free oneway backlinks

Hi Guys,
Question for anyone who might know. I would like to take the next step in article writing and starting using some type of submission software or something of that nature where it actually submits the articles for you to all the different article directories. Has anyone ever used anything like that?
Is it worth it or would you continue to do it manually? Not quite sure what the next step would be if anyone has any advise.
