Now I may get laughed at here, but I really never thought of this. Maybe someone else out there hasn't either.

I was on the phone the other day with a fellow im'er. He pulled up my blogs to give me some tips. He told me this story:

When you come to a red light what do you do? I said stop.
He said when you come to green light what do you do? I said go.
He asked why? I said it's the way I am conditioned.
He said when you come to a blue link what do you do? I said "Click?"
He said "Ditto" so why in the h3ll are all of your links red?
I thought is was pretty. How simple.

Anyway, I changed my background to white, links to blue and my sales have increased, not by leaps and bounds, but $10 bucks a day can mean $300.00 per month, thats groceries.

Color is important. And he hit it right on the nail. Many don't take certain colors into consideration with their websites.

That is good advice. You can always do research on which colors bring certain emotions forward. Using colorology (haha) to increase sales. Nice Job.

To your freedom and success,

Joel

I've always known that colors for various things on a website made a difference but I never thought of it in the way your friend explained it. Very simple yet a great way of putting it. I'll have to remember that for the next time I am trying to tell someone about the colors on their site.

I did'nt think anyone would use anything
but blue links, as this seems the default
colour with everyone ?

That was a funny exchange and a great way for your fellow IMer to make the point. There are lots of ways to make a site "pretty" without confusing visitors and hurting sales. Color and placement are two elements that can influence what people do at your site.

We are creatures of habit and are drawn to things that are familiar simply because they fit into our comfort zone.

We are accustomed to:

- seeing a web site's logo somewhere at the top of the page. The majority are positioned top/left, many are centered, and some are located top/right.

- finding a site's navigation menu near the top of the page in a horizontal layout, and/or vertical along either side of the page.

- the search box and subscription form located somewhere above the fold.

- the payment button appearing near the end of the sales page.

- the postscript (P.S.) following the main message, call to action and signature of the sales letter.

- (and last but not least) blue hyperlinks.

Color is a very important factor to prompting people to pay attention to an ad. Large chain stores pay big money to consultants for this very reason as well as lighting. Great advice, thanks.

In a layman's view, when you see a blue link you really would click on those if the anchor text is great or entails the keyword that you are looking for.

Excellent. Now, throw more traffic at your site, and you should see even more sales.
