I have a Wordpress.org blog that has recently started getting a lot of comments posted to 5-6 articles. That seemed good at first, but now I have concerns.

For the past 5 days, I have been getting 8-10 comments each day posted to these articles. The problem is, many of these comments are written almost exactly alike - a few words are different, but that's it. Many of the back-linking URL's go to forums and websites not related to my niche. I have not seen the same the same back-linking URL more than once and the name on all of the comment posts are different.

My concerns are:

1. Does anybody have any idea why this might be happening? I would like to think my articles and my site are that good, but when so many of the remarks are so similar, that concerns me.

2. Do the Google Bots use comments in their ranking factors? If two or more of these comments are similar, will Google penalize my site?

3. Will Google penalize my site if these back-linking URL's are to sites not related to my niche?

I do get to review and approve/disapprove any comments posted to this site before they get posted and I have temporarily held up on approving any of them. Your input and thoughts would be appreciated.

Do you use AKSIMET? I strongly suggest it. AK catches virtually all spammy comments. The plug-in is available in the Wordpress library.

I wouldn't worry about it. As far as I know google doesn't penalize you for someone else's spam. A few of my posts reached the top of google and they have a few blatant garbage comments which I wasn't aware of at the time.

One word of warning on the approval process: never hold it up. Just get AK and let it do the approving for you.

"Commenting pending approval" tells a reader never to come back to the blog again. My readership jumped when I used AK and let all comments be approved instantaneously. People like their voice being heard when they hit "Send".

ryanbiddulph,

Thanks for your input. I don't have Akismet, but I do have WP-SpamFree. It's suppose to be powerful, too, for preventing spam. I'm not sure which is best.

Does anybody else have any input on this problem?

Probably spammers I use Akismet and then finally I turned my comments off just to be rid of the nonsense.

Don't know if this is the correct action to take on my part but, when I get spammy comments on my WP blog site, I tend to unapprove them -- When it sounds like an advertisement, they are a gonner.

For instance, I have a health site and 3 times, someone's tried to put in a car sales pitch comment...... NOT! Then I had someone try to knock my product while presented theirs. Thing is, I went to check out that product and felt it was a bad thing and I wouldn't want anyone to go that route (for health's sake), so I unapproved it. And, that site was a page-ranker! (Some people here would disagree with that, though.)

Now if it was a competing, good product I would have approved it -- it's my morals and values about the subject on my blog that I wished not to endorse them by no means and I dissed their comment for that sake. However, if it was something that I didn't give 2 rats arse about, sure why not approve it.

I'm not even sure if I have some kind of spam filter on my site (I guess I should check that out) but, I do my own individual thingy. I am almost positive that you won't get slapped by Google for approving spammy comments on your site. .... Let's see what others have to say.

Kudos to your site! You are now getting many comments means your blog is getting page-ranked! It really doesn't matter if the backlink sites are related to your niche. It would be nice, yeah, but it still is a good thing. Thing is, can you go into the spammed comments section to see if your program is working and that you do have filtered comments in them?

You should approve all comments as they come in. I see many that are doing it. That way, you have to power to allow and now allow comments from others.
