What if someone who is opted in to receive email offers and is offered a clear unsubscribe option instead of unsubscribing reports you to authorities? This being the case with a purchased lead. Sorry if this is the wrong place to ask.

That's a shame. That is one of the dangers of buying leads. It is really hard to be sure of the quality of the leads you are getting.
The best bet is to generate your own leads by building a really helpful website so that your visitors come to you. They will appreciate what you have to offer and you don't have to worry about chasing down leads. Your leads come to you! Your success rate will improve dramatically when people are actually looking for whatever it is you are offering.
Hope you don't have any long term damages as a result of this incident. Maybe one of the other members has been in your shoes and will be able to let you know how it will affect you.
All the best.

...do you know how the leads are generated that you are working with??
If you are working with a reputable lead company, they can quite often send you a copy of the ad that your 'lead' responded to...
Other than that, I wouldn't worry about it - I don't think there is anything the authorities can do about it... I mean, how could you get in trouble for sending someone an email?
You just happened to get someone that is probably doing the exact same thing to anyone else that crosses his path at the wrong time - I would advise you to just shake it off , and go on!

I agree with happywife. Generating your own leads is best. You know where you advertised and they know you as opposed to just opting into a generic opportunity. You can actually find companies that do free lead capture pages. Ive used a few but learned to make my own as I can make them exactly as I like and change them if need be. Ive even made pages for others as ive learned how to make them. To be honest ive generated the same leads for free that I used to pay $10 a lead for.
As for the person that is threatening you well you should have something showing where they opted in from the company you bought the lead from. That covers you.

Thanks for your kind responses!
I haven't gotten in to any trouble, but it just bothered me to have received such a mean and hateful email and threats. I decided just to ignore it, as my leadprovider can prove the persons opt-in, and I have clearly put in an unsubscribe option which nobody can miss. It was the first email I sent to that person, so I was like wtf to cause such a hostile response. Thankfully I've received good feedback alot more!
I do generate my own leads mostly, but I decided to give the bought ones a try, but it is true, that the ones you generate ourself are always the best!

The funniest thing with bought leads is when you call a person as soon as you get the lead and they tell you they arent interested. It used to make me fume. They would say they never answered the ad or filled in a form. I began asking them if they answered an ad to get a free ipod of something and then they all remembered.
I figured if you cant beat them join them so when I call I now say im calling to give them their free vacation voucher ( Im in Coastal Vacations and have an unlimited supply) as they have won it on the internet surfing. But I preface it by saying they must go to my website first and then email me their comments. Doesnt always work but it does keep them on the phone and alot of time sit peaks their interest. I mean if the lead providers are offering gifts why shouldnt I.
Incentives always seem to work as people always want soemthing for free. So free it is. I even created a free program to join Coastal as so many people are looking for free.

Unfortunately it can be to easy to report spam. I know that spam helps need to be in place but the filters and such error on the cautious side and limit the ability to do legitimate business.
Someone in our own organization, who had opted in to get email, once had someone report us as spammers because of a break-up with a relative. She was just being vindictive to anyone at all related. We still can't get off the yahoo blocked email list even though we were able to prove that she had opted in, and had gotten emails over a several month period without requesting removal. Every time we sent the request to yahoo they asked for the same information over and over again.
So yes, you can be provide double opt-in lists, and opt-out notices in every email but that still doesn't protect you much.
One thing I learned as well is this:
If you operate more than one business from home than you can be marked as a spammer if you send email from your computer for more than one domain name. I am an artist and have a domain name for it. I also am a BookWise associate and have email for it, and one for my husbands business. Having three legitimate emails going out from one central location marketed us as possible spammers because spammers usually will have several emails. The mail servers can track what other domains emails come from the IP address.
To avoid that I generally have to log-in to the mail server with my hosting company and send business mail from there. I hate to do that because it takes more time but it is better than the alternative.
