Here is another saving tip. add 1/2 cup baking soda (only 1/3 for front loading machines) with the usual amount of bleach to increase your whitening power.

and use vinegar instead of fabric softener. I even use vinegar in the final rinse when I wash my Persian Cat

As far as I know baking soda and vinegar are healthy things to use in many ways.

your tip sounds good and I'll use it...has anyone out there read any Hints from Heloise books? They're full of tons of good money saving ideas and info on our grandmothers' frugal lifestyles- they didn't have stores to run to as much as we did...and they used everyday products that are the basis of a lot of our store bought products...

Doesn't vinegar leave your clothes smelling funny? I honestly don't know so that is why I ask. One of the reasons I like fabric softener is because the clothes smell so good.
