I thought I would share a little bit of my trials and tribulations with you.
I have been seriously working GDI now and a few other income streams for about a half a year or so give or take a few. While i'll admit i'm not ready to retire I will say this.
On May 5th of this year I was laid off from my job due to the economy( I was a project accountant for an engineering firm)
Normally this would have forced me to jump on the first opportunity that came along, this usually means I get a garbage position with a garbage company and am usually not happy.
It's been a little over a month now and I'll be real honest with you, if I didn't have my online and work from home income I would have been in a great heap of financial trouble.
God bless the man who invented the internet, even if it wasn't Al Gore.

Glad to hear your online business has helped you! It has also helped me - haven't had to work in the "real world" since December of last year!

Gilbert,
Sorry to hear about your job, but glad to know your online income is tiding you over. I know when I started a year and a half ago, it was just as a hobby to earn some extra spending money.
Life situations change and now it is becoming more and more important that I do this well. I always find it fascinating how the Lord prepares things for me before I realize or understand what is going to be needed. He does it all the time. 
Keith - Congrats to you! Although I don't know you well or apart from the forum, I'm thrilled for you that you've been able to take that step!

Wow that's great! That is exactly why I started my
home business.
I am a work-at-home medical transcriptionist
besides running an internet business. Last
year my job was outsourced without my knowledge.
I just didn't have any work for a week and finally
was able to find out what happened. I was able
to find other work but not as good as the job I
lost.
So I decided that I was going to start a home
business so that I wouldn't be put in that position
again.
I have set a target date of 12/25/08 to quit my
J-O-B and it looks like it is really going to happen.
Also my husband just found out that within the
next year they are going to be laying off 40% of
the work force so he doesn't know if that is him
or not. Thanks to my home business we will
be prepared if that happens to him also.
It is nice not to have that feeling of desperation
if he was to be laid off.

amen and amen - thanks to the internet I am able to be at home with my kids instead of having to be working at a regular job...
No, it's not always easy but I am convinced that ANYONE can create an income online if they stick with it long enough to find what really works for them.
I also want to take this moment to thank all of you that have helped me so much in my 'work at home' journey - maybe we need to have a forum - reunion someday - lol

Congratulations Gilbert! Thanks for sharing the personal tidbit.
Your story is a testimony to preparation and perseverance, and shows that one can start from scratch and generate a sustainable income online. It is extremly comforting to be able to respond to any unexpected financial downturn without being thrown into a tailspin, or being forced to accept an unpleasant option.
I can clearly recall the day I got my first online check in the mail. It was an affiliate commission for a whopping $21.43 and I jumped up and down as if I had won the lottery. This was after four straight months of stumbling, bumbling, frustration and no results.
More than anything else that check was proof that it was possible to make money online. All I had to do after that was repeat the process, raise the stakes and the results would fall into place. That was almost 8 years ago and I haven't looked back since.
Your story, and Keith's, will serve as a beacon of encouragement for those first-timers at the tentative stage of their online career. It says to them: "Come on in, the water's fine!"

Amen to that.
That first check really puts the attitude that it can be done in you. Once you see ANY money come in regardless of how much time you spend you realize it is possible. ....and let me tell everyone here it is possible to make money online.
Like hermas said once you realize you can do it, it's a matter of doing it MORE.

This makes us stronger and more compassionate towards others. Maybe it was time for you to concentrate on your online business. What could be better than working at home? I think you're very blessed.

I agree 100%! Things will only get better Gilbert. I started working online (a little less than a year ago) in order to supplement my income because I took a job where I would be happier but also took a paycut.
I had no idea I would enjoy doing this so much and now I am making money online! I still have a ways to go but I can see this being a full time job in a couple of years.

This thread is very interesting at this time for me. I have been out of work for a couple of months due to a WC injury and now am finding out there may be issues with my job as a manager at a large co. even though this is Workers Compensation. Unluckily, I make a very good salary and am the only income in my family.
Ironically, I am now finding that with my core business' online, which I love to work, that this may not be an issue in another couple of years that I need to worry about.
I love working online, now that I have gone through close to 3 years of getting it "right" for me, helping others, working with teams, and getting to know people. I have some good online friends that find out personal things before many of my offline friends, LOL!

Don't know how I missed this thread earlier.
Good to hear that your online income is significant enough to really make a difference - especially when it counts.
I'm sorry that you lost your job. It's happening more and more these days. I hope that it all works out well for you one way or the other. I know you have mouths to feed.
The folks above this entry are right, it does boost the morale of the forum members when they hear success stories.
