As far as spamming is concerned, this is one of the worst niches one can be in. On the whole, around 80% of all the new posts I get daily are spam.
The latest trend is from SEO people who just seem to make some mumbo jumbo post with a "Keyword Rich" link in the sig. Reading their posts sometimes just make me laugh Here's one sample:
The term "penny stocks" has been defined in differently by many people. The definition of these stocks if truth be told varies over the resource that you make use. But it may be useful for general information to know that these stocks are unreasonable on speculations. These stocks cost at a dollar each or less. The type of fluctuation in value demonstrated by all of these stocks is really great and changes to the minute. Penny Stocks

And there is another group of people who here come once in a while and appear as thought they just had an adrenaline shot and make 50+ one line posts in one go!
Oh god, give me a break

I saw that one as well. I thought that ****** was spamming at first, but he was surprisingly on topic with his posts. lol
At least the community here is very anti-spam (although thread necromancy is quite common).

solid42: At least the community here is very anti-spam Yes it is. And I'm truly grateful for having some wonderful members here
And years of forum moderation have made me a seasoned Administrator too I'm sort of ruthless is removing spammers and those who do not respect forum rules or try to justify their actions over and above the forum rules.
The other day I had a member who used to cross-post (post the same stuff in multiple forums). When I sent him a warning, it hurt his ego a lot and he started telling me how he was trying to help the members of this forum and how I'm preventing him from sharing good stuff with my members. Finally, when I stood by my ground, he said goodbye and felt this forum wasn't substantial in any way
Yes, my actions does reduce the activity of the forum in some way, but I would rather have 10 genuine members than 100 members who are solely out to promote their sig.

I'm sure it's inevitable that you would develop a thick skin after so many years of moderating a popular forum. So keep on being ruthless to preserve the integrity of this place. We certainly appreciate all your efforts.

And thank you for everything you do. I was on an outsourcing site recently and saw that people were outsourcing their forum posting.
I was like "what??" - but I guess that is one way that the spamming is done!

I certainly don't envy you the task of moderator/administrator. I get enough spam on my own sites to deal with, and I don't really even have a "forum" and they are not marketing niches which makes it 10 times worse. You have my deepest sympathies.

happywife: I get enough spam on my own sites to deal with, I know! I get these comments on my Squidoo lens that are a mile long with nothing but a bunch of keywords and even those don't make any sense.

I have recently noticed a lot of posts and/or comments on my sites recently that do not make any sense whatsoever, and then out of the blue, there will be a link. How do they even think that this stuff will go through. Are people gullible enough to not have some type of spam filtering in place? I wouldn't dare be without it.

The "adrenaline shot" reference is funny. I can picture those people now, frantically posting as many one-liners as they can before the rush wears off.

I used to run a WP blog with comments and I got all sorts of weird comments.
I think spamming is on the rise and only the blogs/forums thatt stay on top of the problem are going to survive.
It's a shame really as it is just one example of the net eating itself.
There is a fine balance to be had between attracting users who will be a useful contributor to the community and self promotion.
For forums I think there should be a 2 tier system.
1. people who just want to join and have no promotional agenda can sign up easily but they have no sig and post links are nofollow.
2. people who are willing to contribute but also want to promote their site have to go through a waiting period, must use a proper email address and then must make X amount of posts before their do follow sig is active and for it to remain active have to post useful content on a semi regular basis ie every 30 days.
Harsh maybe but I think its the only way forums will stay clean.

And its pretty funny actually, I have another business where i sell belt buckles and when I post in classifieds I always end up getting weird spam emails of people trying to sell me there products like ribbons, solar panels and floral arrangements.. lol

Being a singer/songwriter, I once had a website to promote 2 new CD's that I had recently released.
It was amazing just how much spam that never even mentioned the product I was offering was entered on my guest book.
Fortunately, I used a system to either post an entry or delete it before publication!

Oh my gosh if you want to talk about nonsense posts, how about this one I saw in another forum I belong to Someone started a thread asking for help to generate traffic to his website and this was one of the responses: close to hers. She wow gold leaned towards him.“I understand, Catherine,” he high quality Gucci replica handbags said. What does he mean that he understands, Catherine Gucci handbags knockoffs wondered. Something I failed to hear, no cheap football jerseys doubt, she thought, though wow gold their words had been so few that she could not.
All the words I bolded were affiliate links

Spam, in my eyes, is pointless. Why not just take the time to contribute to a community and write quality content? That will take you MUCH farther than some quick cash in your pocket.
Oh well though - There will always be those out there that go against the grain.

bhuff85 I suppose it must work; otherwise, why would they continue to do stuff like that?
