I recently read somewhere that you only need to have about 6 traffic tactics working for you to supply all the traffic you need, and that having too many could actually have a negative impact.
I found the statement interesting, and an intriguing topic for debate.
I had lots of questions:
Of all the traffic generation techniques available, why only so few?
Would these 6 tactics be specific or in general?
If "specific" what would they be exactly?
I know there's always a point of diminishing returns, but of the many traffic getting strategies available, do results really begin to fall off that abruptly after inplementing only half dozen methods?
I was reminded of the search engine scenario. Even though there are hundreds of search engines serving the marketplace, everyone knows The Big Three - Google (63%) Yahoo! (19%) Bing (13%) - controls the search pie.
In that case I could see jostling for placement in only those 3, as it may seem pointless to consider any of the rest.
But how do you apply that rationale to traffic generation?
Is there a singular traffic tactic that trumps all others across all niches?
What would that be?
Email marketing?
Affiliate marketing?
Social Marketing?
And does it only take about 6 traffic tactics to tap into the high end of the potential available traffic?
I could continue asking questions, but I'll stop with this one...
What's your opinion?

Single most lasting and effective in my opinion is article sharing (ie:eZines).
When an article gets re-published it can last for years bringing new traffic.
No further effort is required after writing and publishing it on a sharing site.
Quality of the information in the article will determine your results.
Doesn't mean it has to be fancy or deep research, just unique.
There are over 2 Billion people on-line looking for answers.
Surely a few of those are looking for what you have to say.
To answer the question, yes I think too many can hurt but not for the obvious reasons.
The main reason would be the effort required to keep up with all of them.
Beyond that you can easily lose focus and target the wrong audience.
Planning for a few targeted methods is more beneficial, and less wear & tear.
You can blow up your server placing too many ads in the wrong places.
Not to mention going broke using paid advertising incorrectly.

I think everyone's situation is different. I've had conversions with minimal traffic, but that was because I had a chance to connect with them using offline methods.
As far as multiple traffic methods, I don't think there is anything wrong with it as long as it is automated and targeted.
If its not automated, I think if you have your hands in too many things at once it can hinder you.

I think it depends a lot on your site profile. If you site is a content driven site, which relies heavily on contextual advertisements like AdSense (like most of my sites), then you really cannot afford to ignore search engines. In my close to 7 years of online experience, I have almost entirely relied upon search engines. And if you give them what they need, then they are never going to let you down.
And, according to me, the single most factor that propels your search engine rankings, is article marketing. However, there are many ways to do it. Some methods work, and others don't. However, if done right, they can do wonders to your search engine rankings.
But overall, owing to the transient nature of the web, I think it's futile to focus on any traffic generation technique.
From "Seek", I have now changed my mindset to "Give, and they shall come."

In my 10 years online, all I can say about article marketing is that you can not rely on that to get you lots of traffic to what ever site you are advertising.
You might get some traffic here and there but nothing close to see good conversions.
I still think that paid advertising is the way to go.

There isn't likely one magical specific marketing method for all niches, but there are certain marketing methods that should or could be applied for maximum success: free & paid, online and offline.

I don't know if having too many can hurt but it might would be better if you choose one or two at a time and work them. If you have too many irons in the fire at once, you might not be able to devote enough time and effort to any one of them to make a difference and end up short changing your own efforts.
In the beginning, if you focus on one or two, you can actually see if they are working and if they are, you can then start to explore other methods.
If they're not working after a period of time, then you can drop them and move on to something else. Being patient and giving your efforts time to work is key.
