Hello Everyone;

Does anyone know how to use the plugins built into wordpress to drive traffic to their site? I am a bit overwhelmed by Tags, Meta Tags, Keywords, SEO... what is the difference? I know that's probable asking a lot but if someone could just sum it up for me briefly and in lamen terms, I would be most grateful. Thank you in advance for all your input.

Plugins do not drive traffic. Content does. Plugins only act as an aid.

Tags - Tags are like keywords or labels that enable easy clustering of related posts. For example, if some one visits a tag called say marketing in your blog, then all the posts tagged with marketing will be listed. Also, when you tag the posts in your blog, your posts will also find itself among results in blog news sites like technorati, while searching for that particular tag.

As of now, Wordpress has inbuilt tagging system and no additional plugins are required.

Meta Tags - There are HTML tags that provide additional information to search engines about the page. There are many meta tags but the only ones that might be of interest in regard to SEO (Search Engine Optimization) are Meta Description and Meta Keywords. The latter however seems to have lost most of the significance lately. A good plugin that enables Meta Description on Wordpress is Head META Description.

SEO - Search engine optimization (SEO) is the process of improving the volume and quality of traffic to a web site from search engines via "natural" ("organic" or "algorithmic") search results for targeted keywords. [1]

Hi reap,

My advice is to avoid putting the cart before the horse. These things you are wondering about should be understood in depth before you start blogging or creating any kind of online commercial presence.

I suggest spending a few days reading the threads here in order to determine what components are involved in online marketing. You may decide to purchase a course or join a paid community to learn more about each component.

Then you can experiment with free sites such as blogs, Hub Pages, or Squidoo. After you see what works and you feel you know what you are doing, you can self host a site and cash in on your learning.

This will save you a lot of stress. Learn to think long term. Slow and steady wins the race. Nothing worth while comes over night.

Dear Shield;

Your advice is well noted. However, I am not the kind of person who taps his foot in the water to make sure if whether or not it's compfortable enough to swim in. I like to just jump right in it... if you know what I mean. Besides, who's stressing? I'm not stressing, I just asked a simple question and I thought Vishal did a very good job in answering it to the point.

No offense, but do us both the favor of trying to judge what you think someone is or is not capable of. If you're such an expert than answer the question and stop trying to play Dr. Phil. Get it?

SEO is very complicated, it takes a long time to learn, it's really hard to sum up. Here is a link to a blog about blog SEO that may help:

Reap,

Yes, Vishal gave you exactly what you were asking.

I added a warning to save you from needless suffering. If you don't care for my advice, just ignore it.
