I try to stay away from free web hosting. I have heard some strange stories - like the free hosting company stealing your affiliate commissions. I don't know if this is true - but usually, when you get something for free there is a catch.
Even with the hosting company I use, you can get free hosting with a paid hosting plan - BUT you have to put THEIR (not your) Adsense adds on your website when you use the free hosting - which takes away from clicks from anything you are trying to promote on your website - and when someone clicks on an Adsense add which belongs to THEM, it doesn't even open up in a new window!
So...free is only good if there is no catch....or at least no catch which involves cutting away at your profits.
I think its more profitable to invest $5 a month in web hosting...its really pretty cheap when you think about it.

Yes, it is always better to spend a small amount monthly and get paid hosting, you get better customer support.

Nowadays, few hosting companies offers full year hosting packages for cheaper, its better not to worry about monthly payments...

I would definitly not use free hosting as I tell most of the people that ask me: "When you buy something online, or need information about anything what will you trust? http://freesite.com/blaat234 or www.blaat.com" I did not yet set up my own website selling stuff be it's and advice I give most of the people in real life that I help building up a website. Just my two pence .
PS
At the moment I bought my own website paying just 45 euro's for it a year. This included a 12 euro setupcost and 12 euro's for my .com domain. Each month I pay about 1,25 for 1 gig of website space and unlimited transfer. Even supports all tech's and got myself a 50 dollar adwords certificate.
PPS
Don't know if im allowed to post a weblink but if i am not admins please delete this link [Link removed. Please update your preferences to display your signature - Admin]

Hi gregriv69,
I too support all the advice mentioned by the community above. I would only recommend using free hosts if you are a beginner starting out on web design and wish to test out and learn about all the online stuff which goes with maintaining a website/online presence. In that situation I would only recommend free hosts for a personal site.
Although free hosting does look attractive it is riddled with disadvantages when it comes to hosting your site such as:
Unreliable servers, which frequently go offline or crash and can be very slow. This will lead to surfers quickly leaving your website.
Low bandwidth meaning you can't have heavy files or loads of user visiting your site otherwise the company may actually charge you extra for this.
Advertising in the form of annoying or inappropriate Ads which you won't have any control over.
No 24hr support with a human
The company may suddenly disappear with all your content too.
Basically , you will get what you pay for. It's better to pay for hosting and there are lost of low fair priced hosting packages around.
Good luck on deciding and starting out.
