Or a template?

Hi guys -

I have a site that I want to put up a membership page for each of the people who join me there.

[Link removed - Admin]

It would be a basic page of who they are, what they do and how to get a hold of them. Probably with an email form for contacting them and possibly with a link to their websites for ordering.

It would be ideal if these members could manage their own pages (after paying a join fee) and if the member pages were searchable by name, location, kind of services offered, etc ...

What's the best way to do this??

I'm hosting on a linux server with mysql databases available if that helps ... but I don't have a clue where to begin.

Thanks,
Andrea

Andrea,

It seems to me that in order to facilitate the options you outlined, a relational database would factor into the equation. But that would only be one piece of the puzzle.

You'll also need a script of some kind to execute the search functions for member pages by the different criteria. Integrating password protection, credit card processing and even shopping cart convenience are other considerations.

Implementing something of this scale is not for the faint of heart nor inexperienced. It might be a good(said) idea to engage the expertise of a techie programmer.

Alternatively, there are membership site software packages and Web-based services available that you could investigate.

Wish I could be of more help!

Hermas

Andrea, I found this software and think it would achieve what you want for your site.

Like Hermas mentioned, it will save you a lot of headaches if you can find a programmer to do the job for you. Rentacoder.com is ideal place for such jobs.

That software looks great Rao. I hgope i start making an income off my site so I can afford it, otherwise it's going to be a lot of hard work for me as I want to implement a relational database which will allow my users to search through my bookmaker database for selected criteria.

I think my task is easier than Andrea's from a technical point of view...but I have years of work with the collection of all of the info my DB needs to hold

OMGosh!

You're not kidding about the headache part Vishal!

I spent the better part of ysterday morning trying to shortcut a database understanding ... not education ... u-n-d-e-r-s-t-a-n-d-i-n-g ... lol and by lunchtime, I threw up my hands... lol.

I did run across that software in the hunt, but wouldn't have known it from the rest of the pack without you pointing at it. So thank-you VERY much.

Hermas, you were about the only database info that I DID get yesterday ... I really appreciate your "this is probably what you're talking about" reply

Have a great day guys!
Andrea

I know what you mean andrea. When I decided to learn HTML, i searched google and found a nice site which explained what HTML was, how it worked, and how you can make it work.

When I decided that I want a DB, i searched google, and got a bunch of sites that told me how to add, extract and edit data in databases, but I couldn't find anywhere which thoroughly explained how a database works, how to set up a relationship between the tables/groups, how I make it, where do I type these commands... all of the really basic things. I gave up and decided I would do it later when all of the basic stuff on my website was done!

Aegist -

Why not put Google ads on your site??

Is it a topic they accept?

If you have any sort of traffic, you oughta have that software paid for in a flash.

Do they really pay that well? I am only getting an average of 80 uniques per day...I didn't think that that many would click.

I have been considering it, but I am not sure if I want to clutter my layout or not. I might go and have a look at google now though, and see what they have on offer...

Email me and I'll send you a link to a guy's series that I've found very helpful with regard to ideal placement, etc ...

I'll also be happy to share how much a site that I have with similar traffic is earning ... it's not gobs .... but it certainly will buy that software next month.

Can't share the CTR since that's against the Google TOS, but it's up there

Andrea

PS. andrea@ that domain in my sig will get to me

How much you get paid depend on how much advertisers are willing to pay per click for your targeted keyword. While there is no standard for that, you'll come to know only after you display Adsense ads on your site. 80 uniques is still a good number and there is no harm in trying. Who knows the results may surprise you

Once you have signed up, don't forget read the Adsense optimization tips.

Yeah, i registered and was accepted. I have to update my pages of course though, so I will see how it goes.

Back to the original question though Andrea, I think a database has so much more over templates. the ability to generate every page as it is requested is so much more powerful than needing to make every page beforehand to cover all of the variables...
