Hi
This is one of those "greta" questions like 'how long is a piece of string' !
If you have a pocket full of money there is always the PPC (pay per click) route, but unless you know what you're doing with Google PPC you can easily deplete your bak balance to zero! Care here, but if you get it right its can be a winner. Headline is all important.
Then there are FREE ways to advertise your site like: Jojnt venturing Ebay - 'about me page' forum posting viral marketing - ebooks/e-reports
Then there are places like usfreeads (search engines like this site) and for a small monthly fee you can post advertisements.
Naturally, I've only scratched the surface, but hope I've triggered some thought in old grey matter !

Nothing beats a well written article combined with article marketing and blogging.

I agree with Jeff, article marketing is brilliant for traffic generation.
Ezine Articles are making lots of changes at the moment, making it harder to get articles accepted, but there are plenty of other top article directories.

Hi, I'm new in here! Blogging in facebook is a big plus too! Lots of college kids and teachers are in there constantly. Great avenue! Anyone do online auctions? I heard that Canada has dropped their auction site too, any idea how I can pass the word about a better place to go besides greedbay?

Another great option is partnering with Quality sites for link exchanges.
Link development is as much art as science - and often people worry endlessly about the SEO effects - and they really need to just get started. 1-way, 2-way, no follow or yes follow. Key is to start building.
I have sites that have gotten more value & traffic from 2- way link exchanges with quality traffic sites - than from endless SEO worrying.

One way I have found to promote my site is with pay per click sites. When I earn enough I redeem it for ads. This is working reasonably well for me. I have done this with at-mails and 1 dollar mails. I found 1 dollar mails very good and it brought a lot of traffic to my site.

When I first started searching on how to make money online I went to a lot of gpt, survey, click, read email sites etc. What I got was a lot of virus's and adware problems that I picked out there wondering around. I didn't know any better. And found a lot of scams and spams just waiting for someone like me. I don't do it anymore it's not worth it. My 2 cents. Sonni

As far as article marketing one way to go is to hire someone on a site like elance to type up something like 30 or so. From there you can re-adjust these to suite your niche from different angles.
Getting inspiration from others who write on the same topic or similar can also help and give you something to build on.
