Hi , Can someone offer me some advice pretty please
I have registered my domain name, got a web host , designed my web site using dreamweaver (still to upload but this will be done in the next couple of days). But I am unsure of what I need to do now.
I have been trying to use the forum to see what other people are doing but I seem to be getting more confused. However what I have understood is that what I have done so far is really the easy part. The hard work is in getting your site seen by people and getting them to convert to sales
I noticed that when I used godaddy as my webhost that they offered packages to get your site into google etc, optimise your traffic etc does anyone recommend these packages or are you better to do it yourself.
An idea of what todo next is all I really need - I am quite happy to putin the reasearch and hard work!!
If you reply thanks for taking the time.

Fiona,
If you are only days away from going live with your web site and are still unsure of what action to take next, I'd say you may have gotten a little ahead of yourself.
Do you have a business plan, a marketing strategy, or a short term objective? These are all things that would help you figure out what you could do next.
Once you've optimized your web pages for the search engines, getting them listed is certainly a smart first step, and you can do that yourself.
After that, you've got to get some type of promotional campaign going.
But without specific information about your site and some idea of what you intend to achieve with it, it's difficult to offer more meaningful advice at the moment.

Promote your website by advertising and try to get targetted traffic which will convert

Fiona,
I agree with Hermas. It sounds like you are ahead of yourself. You need to have the copy and monetization set for conversion before you go live.
Additionally, you need to know how you will drive traffic before you go live.
In other words do these two things now and what ever else you haven't done yet. Aside from tweaking, adding additional content, and driving traffic in new ways, going live is one of the very last steps.
Education and other preparations first. Go live last.

Thanks for your advice guys, Sounds as though I have been a bit too ambitious!! oops.
I am only really trying this out to see if I can make a small income (I would be happy with 50 per month - not sure if that is realistic or not?) My site is about dealing with a colicky baby so far I have 10 pages written . I have already set up 2 products to sell as an affiliate (which I genuinely used and feel happy to recommend) and I have also written articles for 2 blog sites I have set up. I was going to start entering baby forums and drop my link in - but not sure how legit that is?? Next I was going to include google adsense to my pages after that I am kind of stuck!
Quoting: Newbie Shield You need to have the copy and monetization set for conversion before you go live.
Sorry, I am really not sure what you mean by this phrase, suppose that goes to show how much I have jumped the game by!

Can you advise how to promote my web site please.
Sorry for asking so many questions but as you can see it looks as though I have got myself in a muddle.
Thanks again for replying so quickly.

Hi Fiona,
Don't panic. You are doing fine. The fact that you have gotten so far on your own really impresses me. I couldn't have done it myself.
I build my sites with SBI, which is a package deal of domain, hosting, researching, building, optimizing, etc., tools all in one.
Doesn't sound like you necessarily need that whole package since you already have your hosting, etc., but the principles that they teach is what you are missing out on.
I'm going to send you a link to download a free affiliate course from them that will help you understand very plainly what you are missing.
The philosophy of SBI is a bit different than what Newbie Shield and Hermas are proposing. I don't build my whole sites and monetize them, etc., before going "live." I research them and begin building page by page. I submit my home page to the major engines as soon as it is built. I then add content pages (with no affiliates or monetization) as quickly as I have time to do it.
I don't start adding the monetization until after I have at least 30 pages built and live and I'm receiving at least 20 visitors a day. While I'm waiting for that to happen (and after I've hit 30 pages), I continue to add content pages and start submitting my site to free directories related to my site topic and posting in forums (just like you mentioned above). This increases my site ranking and brings in that targeted traffic I'm waiting for.
Then I start adding the monetization (Adsense, affiliates, etc). If you start to soon, you can shoot yourself in the foot.
Well, that is the SBI way, anyway, and it seems to work like a charm.
Earning 50 pounds a month is very reasonable to assume you can reach. It will take a few months to get the ball rolling, but it will gradually increase as you continue to grow and build your site, etc.
Regarding your links in the baby forums. Just chat in the forums, answer questions, etc. Don't say, "visit my site!" Just leave your site address in your signature link like we do here. If people like your answers they will check out your site. Either way, you are still getting the value of the link in your search engine rankings. It is a lot better value leaving a link in a baby forum than in a work at home forum.
Anyway, that's my 2 cents. I'll send you that free course link so that you can read it better than I can explain it. I hope it will be a help and set you on the right path to getting that extra income.
Blessings, Angie

I have taken a similar approach to what happywife has said to one of my new sites, i have published the site so it is now live. I haven't exactly got a lot of content on there as such but as time goes on i will be continuely improving the site adding content monetizing it and using methods to promote it and over time it should become very useful. However before i knew anything about making money online i purchased a course (profit lance) and i read this back to front for about 6-8 weeks really learning the whole process and only then did i start to build my first site.
I admire your go it alone approach and what you have done so far is great but i feel having some background knowledge of certain steps before taking the leap is very useful. For example, knowing ways to promote your site, how often new content should be added, strategies for affiliate marketing, adsense, adwords etc.
You have clearly shown you can follow some steps with out much guidance and you are one of the lucky ones, but if you need help look for free articles, forum posts, free ebooks, free resources like the guide happywife has sent you. Other may need the more detailed guides which you can purchase but in your case i feel there is no need.
Unless you are in financial trouble then there is no need to rush, because when you rush this is where mistakes are made, (even in financial difficulty i suppose rushing won't help either) so just take your time know what you are doing before you do it.
Like i said before i must admire your approach and starting this thread was definitely the right way to go, i wish you all the best.

Hi Firefly,
What I meant by "...You need to have the copy and monetization set for conversion before you go live..."
is:
Copy = written content Monetization = ways to make money on the site Conversion = sales
My main message was to learn quite a bit and plan your strategies before you go live.

How can I check out traffic to my site?
I have also read briefly about backlinks and was wondering how to check these also.

Hi Fiona,
You are doing really well! awesome.
You can track visits to your site by installing Google analytics code to your pages.
This is a free service available from your google account.
Also in your web host you will find some analyitcs called: awstats or webalizer. Click on them and see what is going on with your site.
To check backlinks to your site go to the google toolbar and type: link:http://www.yoursite.com
Regards
James

I am try to teach myself Search Engine Optimization and it's a long process, i have also found its mostly about trial and error. Years ago it was just a case of adding the right meta keywords and description but as the world wide web as grown it's much more than that. Ther is no secrets and quick ways to get you high up in search engines but more about making your site enjoyable for your readers. I would say it's about finding a niche and optimizing your site for that niche. Also there are three important factors to getting good steady traffic, Content, links and popularity.

I used a program to set up all my sites and It does alot of that stuff for you. And then walks you through the rest. There's also a forum that helps TONS!! But after you get your site set up, you can set up at cj, shareasale, doubleclick , etc for affiliate programs. then submit your sites, post blogs, write articles. Then repeat.

Hi Fiona
This is what I do to drive traffic to my website.
I use articles to drive traffic to my websites and I have seen wonderful results. This is what i do or rather what is working for me.
1. I use a keyword tool to find exaclty what keywords people use to search for the product I want to promote
2. I then analyze the competition by looking at the number of websites that are already promoting that keyword. There are couple of tricks and tips that i use to see if I will be able to penetrate the market and get position one in google..and other search engines
2a. The number of websites promoting the keyword must be under 5million
2b. The top 2 websites on organic rankings must not have the keyword as part of thier URL.
3. If the above conditions are met, i them write an article using the keywords. make sure you use long and catchy phrase keywords, for example, if your keyword is "dog food", your title should be something like "10 Tips About Healthy Dog Food Sectrets" or "10 FAQs About Dog Food". People like reading tips and FAQs.
3a. I use a tool to write my articles cos english is not my first language.
3b. I use another tool to change the contents of the first article so that i have a number of different articles about the same keyword. This is a gold mine...
4. I then submit those articles to different article directories, not forgetting to include your landing page in your articles.
5. Sit back, relax and smile all the way to the bank.
6. Repeat the process with a different product.
7. To make sure that stay on position one on google for a longer period..I use another tool that automatically creates 300 backlinks to my articles.
Hope this helps. I have tried my best to make this as short as possible.

Looked at your site - looks terrific. From experience I can say that when you know very little about what to do next, there is a high probability that you will now stumble about for the next several months or years trying to piece together what to do in a way that will get you more than a dribble of success for some time - and all the while thinking you are getting there.
Remember, I said, speaking from experience.
My rec is to hook up with someone who can take you step-by-step through the process at a clip. No time-wasting, pure proven steps, by a choice of proven experts.
I have no financial affiliation with a couple of options you could look at and choose from, if you wanted. Let me if you'd like their details.

here's a few things you can do to get traffic to your site. In no particular order: Google Adwords, Safelists, Traffic Exchanges, Reciprocal Linking, Forum posting with your site as a signature, Tv ads, Radio ads, Flyers, Bugging complete strangers on the street, Write your address on your car or clothes and then just travel around all day.

Talk, Talk, Talk.
Tell your friends, your mom's uncle your best friends ex...
Just don't "sell" to them. If you're proud of your site, and it's cool, they'll be happy you let them know.
(And put a link in all of your signatures like what you did here, you can put one on your e-mail's too though.)

I like your site. I was wondering how after five months is it working for you. I remember my first webite 20 years ago. Not sure how well you are doing with it but have you tried marketing your site on craigslist or the backpage.
You have a lot of links too. I would even recommend that you upload a sitemap to google. With all of those links in about a wee you would probably get a 1000 hits a day. Go on youtub and look up sitemaps i am sure there is a video about it.
