What are the best ways to use blogs to promote your website?

Is it as simple as posting links to your site on the blog and gaining traffic?

Should I link the blog on my website also?

I got it that blogs get crawled more often because they have new content more often.

Any words of wisdom from Newbie Shield?

Newbie Shield has the best advice on that - he'll stop by soon, but yes, adding new content to your blog increases it's rank in the search engines.

Have everything linked back and forth - it creates your own little web on the net, so to speak and I admit, I do not understand how it all works I just know that it works.

NS knows the 'how' of it all much better than I do....

Thanks for you input mountainmom5!

That is my plan, to have a few blogs all linking to my site.

Thanx Mountain.

Philip,

Mountain is right and so is your assumption - you can link from your free blogs to your main site to get more traffic. If your free blogs gain Page Rank, you can pass some of that on to your main site to give it a Page Rank boost.

Also free blog networks get crawled more because as a whole, they frequently add content.

Additionally, popular free blog networks such as WordPress.com and the like lend authority due to the page rank of their higher level pages and because of the extensive internal linking structure - same as many Web 2.0 sites such as Squidoo.

Domain age plays a part too.

However, large traditional sites can gain the same benefits in many of the same ways - good internal linking, on-page SEO, off-page SEO, domain age, the frequent addition of new content.

Blogs aren't really any more powerful than traditional sites but they have gained that reputation and it may seem that way.

Hello All,
I will add one little thing. I would advise 1 way linking as opposed to 2 way linking. ONLY have your blog pointing to your site and NOT your site pointing to your blog. I would also suggest adding articles to the mix.
I've been working really well with the following setup.
1 main site(or blog)
2 feeder blogs that point to my main blog. These blogs are related in a way to my main blog, but do cover different topics.
1 article index suidoo page, which I point to from my main site.

I've had really good results with writing articles pointing to my main site and 1 of the feeder blogs. I then update the article index squidoo page every time an article get's published as well as posting a link to the article in the blog that was NOT covered in the article.

The great thing is I get organic traffic to each blog and squidoo page based on the content of the site as well as click throughs to my other sites because they are related...as well as a nice "1 way link boost" for all my sites and articles.

If you want to increase your page rank schedule 60-70 articles to post on your blog. Then drive direct traffic to it with article marketing (EZA). Add RSS feeds, comment on other blogs, have a sig line...etc.

Thanks for the great advice guys!

I was going to ask the question about 1-way or 2-way linking.

Thanks for answering it opendomain!

Cheers!

this has been a pretty helpful little thread...

opendomain-- are you saying that when you have an article published you link the article from the OPPOSITE blog so its set up like this:

Blog #1-->article-->Blog #2

??

sorry I was a little confused when I read it...

My best advice to newbies is not to blog, lol. Ugh, it can be tedious.

But anyway, if you're going to put yourself through that, make sure you get your blog registered on Technorati. And social bookmark the heck out of your posts. That worked wonders for me.
