I have been in a dilemma recently over which autoresponder to choose. After trying a few in-house scripts I have decided that its best to go for a hosted solution.

Actually I need it as a newsletter more than an autoresponder.

Price wise, Getresponse beats Aweber. Here's the break-down as of 12/11/08:

Aweber:

Subscribers - Pricing

0 - 500: $19
501 - 2,500: $29
2,501 - 5,000: $49
5,001 - 10,000: $69
10,001 - 25,000: $149

Getresponse:

$17.95 a month

"Mail to as many names as you like, and pay just $4.50 per month for each 5000 subscribers beyond the 10,000 that are already included without extra charge"

So for large mailing lists, Getresponse works out to be lot cheaper.

But every Tom, Dick and Harry seem to use Aweber. Even the guys who have their testimonials on Getresponse use Aweber now (This is one of my favorite tactics before I buy any software. I see the testimonials and check out their websites to see if they still use the software!)

What's your say?

I've used Aweber, but not Getresponse. Aweber was very easy to use and user friendly, and I've heard that Aweber is the better of the two. There is also Constant Contact, which has a free 60 day trial.

Hi Vishal,

Valuable poll.

Another difference is that AWeber requires and opt-in confirmation whereas GetRESPONSE does not.

For some, that is a big determining factor one way or the other.

It's been my experience that most of the higher profile marketers seem to favor AWeber by a slight margin but they also mention that GetRESPONSE is a great second choice.

I think that the price difference and the opt-in confirmation should be the deciding factors. Otherwise, you or I would be quite pleased with either program.

In the poll I voted for AWeber.

Tough choice - both programs are excellent!

I see the benefits of aweber but why pay this amount if you have a large business vs using trafficwave.net? They even allow you to make your own leads capture pages. Maybe I just don't see aweber for what all it is....?

Currently, i am using GetResponse.

It is quite a nice autoresponder.

But i have heard AWeber is also a good autoresponder. I have never use Aweber before. If i have a chance in the future, i might have to try it.

I say I prefer Aweber, I've been satisfied with the features and the support, but I've never tried GetResponse. Haven't really heard much about it either. It really does seem like most of the buzz is around Aweber.

In today's marketplace popularity, Aweber is to autoresponders
what Google is to Search engines, with Get Response taking the
Yahoo! slot. My vote went to Aweber.

One key point is that Aweber has the highest email delivery percentage of the Autoresponders.

Thanks a lot for your responses.

I finally decided to go with GroupMail, a desktop based mailing client.

Here's what made me drive my decision:

1) I need the service for only sending weekly mailings, hence I don't require a full-fledged autoresponder service.

2) I won't be sending mails until I gain sufficient number of subscribers. If I opt for hosted solutions, I'd be simply paying monthly expenses till that time.

3) If I happen to switch providers, I may lose a lot of subscribers as hosted solutions like GetResponse and Aweber require leads to confirm their subscription when being imported.

4) With desktop clients, I have greater control over my leads.

There are disadvantages over desktop clients too like:

1) You have to pay additional charges if you opt for dedicated SMTP servers to deliver emails. SMTP servers of most ISPs get blocked due to spam and their delivery rate is pathetic.

2) Extra coding like double opt-in is required to handle subscribe requests. This can cost additional charges.

Hi Vishal,

That looks like a competitive candidate solution.

They do have a lot of awards and high profile customers such as Sony, Samsung, HP, and Adobe.

The site is a PR6.

Good choice, let us know how it goes.

Has anyone tried PHPList? It is a free open source auto-responder that is offered as a Fantastico script with some hosting accounts.

I wonder how it measures up against the options mentioned so far in this poll and thread.

I am considering using it.

I tried it but it has too many options and I somehow couldn't get it to work. BTW it is not an autoresponder but only newsletter management script.

Hi Vishal,

You're right, it's a one-way system. Then again, how many folks actually use an auto-responder as a two-way system. Many folks set their auto-responders to bounce replies.

In essence, PHPList seems like it would serve the purpose that most would use for list building just as if they were shopping around for an auto-responder.

I just started looking at it. I'm not entirely sure if it has everything a person would need for list building and management as the above programs would have. Think it's missing anything important?
