Wordtracker has just released a Keyword Question Tool that you can use to find questions entered by users in search engines, based on your seed keyword.
http://labs.wordtracker.com/keyword-questions
These long-tail keywords can be quite easy to rank for.

Yes, I think long tailed keywords are the way to go. short one are costly and there is too much competitions.
