Ok so... I have been reading a couple of the threads here and there seems to be a common question on everybody's mind...
How Do I Set-Up A PPC Campaign?
Well... first of all... I suggest that if you have no clue what PPC Marketing REALY IS you should first start with Article Marketing which is free by the way...
Any who...
Here is how the big boyz do it...
First they set-up their campaigns like this...
Niche Market --> Perfect Customer --> Relevant Keywords --> Relevant Ads & Ad Groups --> Relevant Landing Pages --> Relevant Product and/or Service Offerings
Let's explore this a little further...
If I were to set-up a campaign for something that was HOT and already selling hint, hint! I would first do some due diligence by performing the proper research. Then I would find out WHO my "perfect customer" is and WHY they are buying (and as you get further along you will probably find out that most profitable niche markets are composed of people who are trying to solve problems) I would then select keywords that my "perfect customers" are using to buy that product and/or service.
Then I would set-up a landing page (after testing) by using the Common or Focus Keyword Technique...
For example...
Let's say that my Ad Group's common keyword is "golden retriever dog food"
So my Ad Group's Name would be...
Golden Retriever Dog Food
and I might have keywords like...
dog food for golden retrievers
healthy dog food for golden retrievers
which dog food should I use for my golden retriever
golden retriever dog food
nutritious dog food for golden retrievers
etc
etc
etc
And my "relevant" ad would look something like this...
Golden Retriever Dog Food
Using The Right Dog Food?
Ad Years Of Life To Your Retriever!
HealthyDoggie Dot Com/GoldenRetriever
Well... hopefully that gave you some ideas on how to improve your campaigns...

Great post! One thing that I'll add is to use the keywords you are bidding on in your ad title and also in the main body of the ad if possible - and make sure the landing page you are linking to contains the keywords as well. This will give you a better quality score with Google.
Also, if anyone is new to Adwords, as Netbiz suggested, start out with the free methods of promotion FIRST before diving into Adwords. Once you are profitbable with the free methods of promotion, you can then start Adwords, but ONLY after you have gone through a quality course on Adwords.
Too many people dive into Adwords without a thorough understanding of how it works, without keeping a close eye on their campaigns, and before you know it, they have spent hundreds, and in some cases thousands of dollars without having earned a dime in return. So...be careful if you are going to use Adwords, and be "smart about it, rather than careless!

Great post, NetBiz. I personally do not like PPC, less than optimal results with a campaign I used in the past. I was new to internet marketing and had a store through StoresOnline. They taught the use of ppc as a major traffic generation strategy. It didn't work very well for me, but then I made many of the mistakes you alluded to in your post. But I certainly see the value of it, if used correctly.
I'm more a fan of attraction marketing, social networking, blogging, forums, etc. However those are slow to bear fruit, whereas PPC will jump start your business a lot faster. Now, our group is using another approach with some awesome results. We put our wallets together and we buy ads in some of the major Home Business and related magazines, such as Home Business Connection, True Wealth, etc. Those ads are not cheap, but with all of us contributing, it's a bit more affordable.
Most of the prospects who call us are very serious, quality people. We still get tire kickers, of course, but the ROI seems to be pretty good for us. I have added some real players to my downline as a result of this. My thought is, if I am going to spend money to get prospects, I want them calling me, not me chasing them. I don't care for the whole lead chasing cold calling game. It's frustrating and tiresome, especially when you make an appointment for the follow up call and they are not there. They have just disappeared off the face of the earth. And, if you do finally get them, they put you off, or they have not even looked at your website or materials, yet. Frustrating!
I would much rather use methods that produce interested, serious, hungry people who are ready to do something to make their dreams come true. Our ad campaign is producing those kinds of results. From what I have read and observed other successful online marketers doing, with good ppc, you should get the same result, quality people calling you! That's what you want. I also agree with your suggestion to wait until you are having some success with other less expensive means, and after you have taken the time to study ppc and learn the ins and outs of it. Don't go into it half cocked, unprepared, and most importantly without a ppc budget. You will throw too much money away, if you do.

Good posts.
For nubies, I would suggest noting that netbiz's niche suggestion is pretty specific. Not simply dog food, but golden retriever dog food.
Also note that keywords netbiz suggests range from 4 to 10 words long.
If you're too general, you can find you PPC money flowing out of your wallet faster than a Congressmen cold spend it. Sometimes, with very little to show for it.
So, be careful picking your niches and your keywords.

Great information. This is good for the PPC beginners to start with. But for me, if you are really new to PPC, you should try free marketing methods first. I might take times, but at least, it's free and if you do it right, it works as well.

PPC seems risky like gambling. I don't know enough about IM to gamble and lose money. So I take my time and do research before I make money spending decisions.

PPC will work. I think it is more cost effective on smaller sites such as yahoo or msn opposed to google. Less competition.

That is great informatuon and tips on PPC. I think if you are new it would be wise to start with free advertising methods until you start generating income, then you can re-invest some money into a PPC campaign. It will give you a chance to try ads. until you find the right ones that work best.

I agree with the free advertising for newbies. Also, I need to point out that the "big boys" will literally toss down thousands of dollars just to test an ad. They also utilize a concept called arbitrage where they will post Adwords on their sites and utilize lower cost PPC platforms. Misspelling keywords is also often a common practice. Lots of research and investigation should be done before becoming aggressive with it. You are more than likely going to need an excellent keyword research tool as well that not only provides vertical but lateral keyword suggestions.

Also split testing is very important so you can continually fine tune your ad-you must test test test. Setting up tracking of your convesion is also important as is a landing page rather sending straight to an affiliate link. Most of the PPC networks have very good tutorials and you should read them all and practice small. Turn content off as a beginner and stick to search results only.
There are also many good ebooks about PPC as it can take some practice. Keyword research is a related field and also a lot to learn there. I would suggest starting at a smaller PPC network as the cpc will be lower and less traffic so you have time to learn before blowing your budget.
Having the right tools and support is always important.
