I got a little discouraged a few months ago. I saw these tough(er) economic times coming and did very little marketing. I wondered if it wouldn't be very hard to try to find any kind of new niche under the circumstances.
I noticed however, that some of my campaigns started getting sales that had been doing very poorly. some of these involved work-at-home or make money online programs. That makes sense - with people being laid-off left and right it makes sense that a lot more people would be looking for alternative income sources.
I started looking around the web to see if I could get some ideas on what to market during this downturn and I think I got some good ideas/suggestions from some very successful online marketers...
1. People are looking for distractions to take their minds off tough times - video games, fantasy football, movie downloads, etc.
2. home foreclosures have spawned an online foreclosure profits ebook niche.
3. People are looking for ways to save on gas, the electric bill, food and other monthly expenses...
4. I saw an article recently that said a lot of people are now buying 'survival food' (I guess some people are really worried).
What other ideas, advice or niches for hard times come to mind?
Any forum members have ideas or suggestions?

Hi Marktech,
You might add the following to your list:
1. Bartering
2. Discount shopping - including dollar stores, sales, and used goods
3. Inexpensive and/or free activities
4. Growing your own food
5. Making your own stuff from scratch - clothing or whatever
6. Low cost recipes

Anything that involves a "need" rather than a "want" will sell. Also, things that people are passionate about such as hobbies and collectables.

I agree, needs are becoming more important than wants as things tighten up. I did a keyword search on "need" with one of my keyword tools and got a lot of interesting and funny phrases What many people were typing in as "I need..." were more like wants if you catch my drift.
Thanks for the Newbie Shield, certainly some ideas there.

I have seen several clips on the news stations in the last several months where recessions are a time when network marketing and many home based business' actually do better. Alot of people are tired of putting money into the stock market and real estate and want a good secondary or even primary income. Job security is certainly not what it was either! Here is a link to one of them. I do not promote these particular business', mine is privately owned, but these give a good example of who's stocks are going up, LOL!

definitely stick with making money online niches. You could try and expand on that niche I suppose. It's a good idea in my opinion
Hope this helps

Heres my take on this, pls feel free to dissagree, maybe i will learn something new.
I think that in these tough times, it just means i have to double my marketing efforts. Unless that particular niche is completely worthless.

Adult Entertainment always has and always will thrive online. While most adult dvd rental and adult novelty type stores are watching there sales diminish, adult websites offering video on demand are flourishing. It's not everyone's cup of tea of course but facts is facts.

I believe gifting programs are the best way as you share a part of ALL of the amount people invest rather than a company getting a huge portion of the amount invested for a "product" which in to many cases is not used or worth using.
I also believe that the absolute highest ROI (return on investment) is in marketing using voice broadcast. I found one that less than a penny a call!

I have to agree with srama3. I have recently joined in a make money online niche because of the recession. Many people are looking for employment. Part time or full time. I believe the idea of making money on the internet has crossed thier minds. I can see that particular niche increasing instead of decreasing like a lot of others are doing in these tough times because it falls under a need in thier minds instead of a want. At least it was like that for me.
