To me the single greatest word spoken in all of the forums in which i participate is the word, Belief! I subscribe to the mantra, "what you believe you can achieve." What do we believe in, in MLM?
1. First and foremost one MUST believe in himself/herself.
2. Their company, product, service - I agree with Michael, no getting around this one.
3. Their Upline, mentor, coach, etc. - You must connect with your upline.
4. Their Industry - MLM is not easy, It's simple, but not easy, but it WORKS, plain and simple (no pun intended).
5. People need what you have to offer, both product and opportunity. You have something that will make their life better! Never forget that.
6. A secure retirement with long term passive income is WORTH working for. For most of us, MLM it the "only" way to acheive that. There is NO PLAN B! (I seem to recall a post written on that one, lol!)
7. You Will encounter difficult times, objections, dry spells where you couldn't sell water to someone dying of thirst in the Desert! It just happens. Like everything else in life, things go in cycles. You will encounter this, Believe it! By believing it, you will be prepared for it, and won't get derailed by it!
There are more, I'm sure, but you get the point. We in MLM have a set of principles and beliefs that drive us, motivate us, keep us on the "Straight and Narrow," if you will. Stick to them, follow them, you will succeed. The only way to fail in this industry, IMHO is to quit. Plug away, do the things you know to do, follow your leaders and mentors, and you will get there. Remember it's a marathon, not a sprint. It's an endurance race. Along the way you will see people fall by the wayside, and some of them will be people you have sponsored. Don't let that discourage you. Focus on the prize, keep moving forward, sometimes even barely crawling, but forward none the less. YOU WILL ARRIVE AND THE JOURNEY WILL HAVE BEEN WORTH IT! I guarantee!
I hope this helps someone.
I would love to hear from some of you pro's in here on this. My desire is to help any fellow entrepreneurs who may be struggling, or on the verge of giving up "The Dream." Perhaps they will stop by here and be encouraged to Keep on Keepin On!

Great post, Mitch. Belief lies at the core of one's mindset, attitude and motivation. I found this particular point interesting...
PMHayes: 7. You Will encounter difficult times, objections, dry spells where you couldn't sell water to someone dying of thirst in the Desert! It just happens. Like everything else in life, things go in cycles. You will encounter this, Believe it! By believing it, you will be prepared for it, and won't get derailed by it! Sometimes simply anticipating this situation is not sufficient to keep you steadfast in your belief. It is when the going gets really tough that most people cave in. It's the barren stretch of fruitless effort that can insert the slightest element of doubt - a crack in the belief armor, if you will - and invite all knids of second-guessing and questioning.
Ironically, this is when the strength of your belief is truly put to the test; when you'll discover how firmly rooted your convictions are, and whether or not you have what it takes to withstand the battering. Just surviving one of these episodes adds another layer of depth and breadth, and fortifies your belief.

I like your ideas, Hermas.
I find that listening to something inspirational, or reading some type of self-development book, can keep me positive in the face of difficulty. It's important not to let negative thoughts take over your entire being to the point where you feel depressed or anxious.
I also try to stay away from the news. There's nothing wrong with being up-to-date, but watching the news daily is not really necessary. If something big happens, you'll know about it somehow!
There are some really good, inspirational videos on You Tube, as well. They can help solidify your positive beliefs. A walk in nature sure helps, as well as a nice cup of herbal tea to make you feel better!

Absolutely great post and so true!
Belief is essential for success. There are other things that are important also, but this comes first.
Thank you for sharing this.

Great post, Mitch.
I would add that cooperative marketing overcomes the issues of drop outs that are experienced in MLM's. I've done some excellent MLM's in the past, but the drop outs were a constant struggle. I prefer the cooperative marketing model now.
I've found that once in a while if I am having a mentally challenging day as regards the proper attitude in building my business, in spite of knowing what I should and will do, it is good to step back and take a day or two off. That can do a world of good as well!

I found a great article today, while doing a search in Digg. The article is by Carol Ann Martin of "Synergy Prosperity Alliance." The article is titled, and appropriately so, "Positive Thinking Sucks." One short quote from her article will explain what she meant.
"The reason why positive thinking doesn't work - is because - IT SUCKS - your energy..."
Now before you get up in arms over this one, let me share another quote or two from her article. Here they are.
" You see, there is a BIG difference between THINKING positive and BEING positive."
and
"So, if you have to THINK about being positive - you are not BEING positive. If you have to think about how you should be positive because you are currently feeling guilty about confusion, worry, doubt, fear, frustration, anger, etc. etc. etc. - you are not BEING positive. It's too late at that point. All you are doing is THINKING about BEING positive - and not actually BEING. And THAT is why most people don't see the results of positivity in their lives. They are THINKING about how they SHOULD be positive, or struggling with their already NEGATIVE feelings and behaviors - rather than just SHIFTING AND TAKING ACTION TO BE positive."
So what, you may ask does this have to do with belief? Everything. Belief is an action verb, like being. One does not try to believe. One does not think about believing. One believes, or one does not. Belief is not a passive thing, it's an active, living, breathing, life changing, empowering thing. It's something you DO.
The same is true for positive thinking vs. positive being. Trying to think positively is energy consuming and mind draining. You don't think about believing, you believe. You don't think about quitting smoking, you quit. You don't think about exercising and eating healthy, you do it. Same with positivity. Quit thinking and just get up, get moving, and DO something positive. Take positive action. In the words of the Nike ad, "Just Do It!"
I liked that. I hope I haven't rustled too many feathers with it.

I agree 100% - not to quit, to keep going and believing. I guess 30 days in business is just the beginning...God give me patience...

Great post and so very true.
I believe it's absolutely essential to have a big "why" for being in network marketing. A burning desire keeps us going when we hit obstacles or rough times which do happen.
however even with a big why, its just as important to have that belief.
"What the mind can conceive and believe it can achieve" is what Napoleon Hill said.

Absolutely. Success starts with a decision. But a decision itself comes from belief - both in yourself and in a program.

Good Post, but I "believe" it needs to go beyond belief, to KNOWING. I KNOW I can do this, that I deserve abundance, that the opportunity, the product, and me have intrinsic value and have a market. I have the Gold! Most importantly, I KNOW I can help others achieve their dreams and my dreams will unfold naturally through helping others.
The next important word is SERVING. I do this because I KNOW the opportunity, the product, and my interactions with others SERVE the people with whom I come in contact, and SERVE the greater good.
My Motto, whether it be through MLM or other areas of life is "Service through Technology."
After KNOWING and SERVING, the next step is to EXPERIENCE. If not in this material world, I close my eyes and "See" success, "See" my Dreams as having come true. It's very important that this "Inner"Experience be KNOWN as here and now, rather than sometime in the future. The future never arrives, it's always NOW.
Ultimately, it is not my desire for wealth or the belief that I can have it, that will bring it to me, it is my will to SERVE, KNOWING I offer great value, that brings me to the EXPERIENCE of success.

Very Nice Post indeed.
Today, I see way to many people who are beat down to the point that they have no belief in anything, including themselves.
If I may suggest a movie and book that is great on this subject?
"In Pursuit of Happyness" Spelling is wrong on purpose. go to Amazon and get either the book or the movie, it is incredible what belief can do in your life.
My 2 cents

Belief is the solarity of making an icome based on yourself. Belief makes the world go round and because it has this almighty power it is the most important role in anything we thrive to do.
I mean if there was no belief, where would we be?
We wouldn't be able to do anything, busniness's would fail, countries, people, realtionships, eventually nothing would be able to co-exist.
So with belief the whole world depends and thrives on it and if belief can be a world help, obviously it will fit into your business plan as the most valuable tool.
